What Was The Prison ?

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins ,the just for the unjust ,that he might ,that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison:
Which sometime were disobedient , when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing ,wherein few ,that is ,eight souls were saved by water. 1 Peter. 3:18,19,20

Here in these verses we see that Christ once suffered for sins ,that we might be reconciled to God by His vicarious sacrifice.
We also know by this that He preached to the spirits in prison.

What was the prison mentioned in verse 19 ?

hmmmmmmm.... interesting question indeed....

I heard it mentioned once that this verse speaks of Jesus' visit to hell.... as the previous verse references "being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit" and His journey would have placed Him in a place, or prison, of spirits....

perhaps an additional descriptive as to what happened around the time that Jesus tooks the keys of hell and death from satan.

Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

I can't say that I know that to be the correct answer; I'm open to any possibilities.... it would be interesting to know what He preached as well....

If Jesus went to hell did He go to a fiery burning pit or a holding place for departed spirits ?

No I don't but I'm looking.The Greek words for Prison seem to mean a place of bonds or a cage or cell , or a keeping.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

so perhaps one has to ask if "spirits" speaks of a) human souls or b) spiritual beings such as demons.... just food for thought....
