Will corporations will soon control your internet?

The FCC voted 2-1, along political party lines Thursday, to begin a rule-making process to replace the Open Internet order, or net neutrality rules, adopted in 2015 by the agency, then headed by Chairman Tom Wheeler, a Democrat.

Those original rules included provisions preventing Internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking or throttling legal content users sought to access, as well as preventing ISPs from accepting payment to prioritize some data.

The 2015 rules derive the FCC enforcement power from regulations formulated for telephone companies within The Communications Act of 1934. Republicans have called such regulation as heavy-handed and burdensome for ISPs.

The proposed rules will consider whether to keep or modify the rules prohibiting ISPs from blocking and throttling content or from prioritizing some content over other content, possibly for payment, and the elimination of a Internet conduct standard meant to prevent ISPs from unreasonable interference with consumer's access to destinations on the Net.

I believe this could be one of the most important issues of our time. Unfettered access to news and information is absolutely necessary for a free and democratic society.

Imagine a not so distant future wherein you can't access news and information that OmniCorp doesn't want you to have.

Where do you stand?

Net Neutrality needed to be repealed. obama's FCC was moving towards censoring the internet.

What's incredible is that some on the left, like Aquila, claim the lack of Net Neutrality will lead to censorship, which is actually what a lawsuit in court proved Net Neutrality was going to do.

Ultimately, the question seems to be, who do we want having power to control internet content, the government which is beholden to the people, or private corporations who are not.

Personally, I believe that the internet is doing just fine as it is. Why change it? What content is being denied you?

What if we had corporate control of the internet when Big Tobacco was being investigated over it's claims that tobacco was harmful? We'd have seen big tobacco collude with ISPs to ensure that you only accessed content THEY wanted you to access.

It's a terrible idea.

The Democrats have been leading the charge to stifle free access of information for years.

I'm interested in an example.

If government did move to censure internet content, we could change course next election or protest and see changes.

If OmniCorp gets control of it...all true say in the matter is finished. Omnicorp isn't a democracy.
