One of the grander visions painted by the scriptures, is of a world unseen by human eyes. A mind-challenging landscape, densely populated by angels. All we know about these angels…or their world…is what’s written in his word. They lay just beyond the proving grounds of science.
What’s ironic; is that we search deep into the night skies…at a cost of gazillions…looking for alien worlds. Yet here in the scriptures, is just such a world. Known by his word to exist; but alien to us, because 99% of us live and die, having never seen an angel, nor a vision of their mysterious world.
We don’t know just when, the angels were created by God. We only know that they were in fact created…and that it happened prior to the stately seven day creation on earth. And so while angels cannot die…making them eternal going forward like us…yet they did have a beginning in eternity, like us.
We don’t know just where, the angels were created by God. What the physics and politic of their world is. We only know that there is a place…before he hung the earth on nothing…where angels were created.
Without knowing the boundaries of their habitation, it’s difficult to gauge their population. On Patmos, John numbers the angelic host as:
Ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.
Our Lord counts them even greater in number. In our warp-speed world, count the number of children therein. Jesus assures us, that at least this number of angels, are beholding his Father’s face as you read this.
And while with age our angel may cede that privileged place, yet it’s doubtful we outgrow him. He’s probably our angel for life. After all, scripture declares that we fragile humans shall judge these unseen angels. This is no small thing. Angels are very mighty. Even our Lord so infers:
Also I say unto you, whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the son of man also confess before the angels of God: but he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
It may well be then, that the only angel we are remotely qualified to judge, is that very one assigned to us in childhood. And if angels cannot die; one might dare number the angelic crowd at least as many children ever born. Or, the number of the entire host of humanity, from all time.
Add to this, the angels who aren’t representing a human before the Father’s face. The cherubim…the seraphim…the princes of city and country…angels of nature…angels of judgment…the spirits of just men made perfect…the general assembly. Our alien world, appears to be a very populated place.
Time and space are the bread and butter of our thought process. It can be difficult, then, to engage a world where these foundations don’t apply. Angels have their own habitation. This would seem to infer boundaries and limits…whatever their physics. The rarity in human history, of angels crossing those boundaries, only elevates its mystery.
So lofty a bourn is theirs, that God calls it their:
First estate.
First here, implies more than just a pecking order in time. The word also carries with it; first in rank…first in power and prominence. First between Almighty God, and everything else. The very highest of heaven’s tiers.
And yet this very highest of heaven’s tiers, seems ever aware of humanity, here on earth. They witnessed the dawning of:
The first begotten into the world.
Every time the gospel is preached:
With the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven.
they desire to look into it. It’s curious to them…which infers that they can see it happening. And yet again, we are told that:
There is joy in the presence of the angels of God, over one sinner that repenteth.
Again, this suggests that they can actually see us repenting.
So then while angels remain remote and unseen, yet they can watch our very lives. We are left to wonder what a billion or so angels beholding the Father’s face, are interceding for. We only know, that they are somehow held responsible for their actions. And that we, of all things, are made the agents of that accountability…when we judge them.
Wouldn’t it be something, then, if your angel is somehow tasked, with helping to get you to heaven. Never encroaching on your free will. Never breaching the dimensional wall between us. But at each crossroad in your life, nudging you toward truth and heaven. Peripheral to your relationship with Jesus Christ…but charged with keeping the playing field even. Making sure that the ordinances of heaven are being followed. At each point of decision in your life, providing you with the righteous option.
From his toolbox of circumstance…his standing with the angels of nature…his history with God; putting little bumps and ticks in your path, trying to steer you toward heaven. Was it your own lusts and appetites that trampled his little ticks and nudges on your path? Apparently, we ourselves shall judge. When the enemy red-carpeted your secret sin, did your angel construct a bypass? A roadblock? You yourself shall judge. Because while we each have our own business of the day; it would appear that in the angels world, we are, the business of the day.
it might take me a trillion years of training in heaven before I reach that level.
At the resurrection our status will be magnified.
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry , nor are given in marriage : 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
