Helping "Others"

“That’s what comes across. It comes across that if you belong to a group that tries to help Hispanics, ... somehow you’re suspicious. The same arguments were used against Thurgood Marshall, and I think it’s wrong.”

Sen Leahy brings up a valid point in his criticism of some of the Republican grilling that Sotomayer has taken.

His comment made me pause for a moment.

What do you all think about his remarks and the implications of it?

Only valid if you're a Democrat or Lib ...

Gimme a break! This was as politically biased a statement one could make. Were this a right-leaning Republican-nominated person, the Democrats would have questioned their associations with right-leaning groups.

Leahy's not just shamefully playing the race card here, but he's absolutely lying about the reason Sotomayer was questioned over her associations with the group.

The only reason his comment should make you pause, is to slap your forehead in disbelief at the spin this guy is making against the Republicans.

Purely political. Go back to W's nominees and other Republican nominees ... go back to Thomas and see what trash they threw at him and other nominees that dropped out of consideration because of what Democrats questioned.

Not discounting anythingyou have said, I had to pause because I am convinced it is not wrong to be a part of an organization whose missio0n is to ultimately help people.

That is how it strikes me.

However, I have heard people say that "La Raza" and the "NACCP" are not the same, as in the "NAACP" is very moderate and the "La Raza" is not.

However, this is purely hearsay, and I am not real sure that Sotomayer was/is closely with either of the organizations.

Would it be wrong to be a member of an organization whose mission was to help other people? I am not talking about helping some by causing death and destruction to others.

There's nothing wrong with being part of either of those organizations, just don't plan on being a Supreme Court Justice nominee. It is not a place for activism-minded people.

Re: Helping "Others"

La Raza is very different than the NAACP. La Raza believes the southwestern US belongs to Mexico and supports efforts to make it part of Mexico again. Their map of the United States shows most of the southwest US as a part of Mexico. They call the territory Aztlan.

Cannot compare the NAACP to La Raza. The NAACP isn't hoping to make any part of the US a part of Africa.

If Sotomayer was a part of that organization, it's very important to know what her beliefs are in reference to La Raza and Aztlan.
