Tax info for churches

http://www.irs.gov/charities/churches/index.html

The IRS has some easy to understand guides.

Based on my research, there is really no reason to file for 501c3 status since churches already are exempt from form 990 reporting. But while we can discuss issues of the day we can't advocate any particular political party or politician over another even without the 501c3 status.

Other than being qualified for faith based grants... why go for 501c3? Everyone I talk with tells me 501c3 is necessary for a church, but the IRS itself tells me different.

Opinions?

I don't believe your saints can claim donations on their tax returns unless you are a 501c.

And I'm pretty sure you can't achieve tax exempt status, in most states, without a 501c.

With churches they can yes. Churches are covered as automatically exempt without the 501c3.

And the 501c3 is for federal taxes on non-profits, the states typically have a state tax waiver form.

Re: Tax info for churches

You are very right. Where I am, the county kept asking the pastor for verification from the IRS that the church was exempt, he sent them the IRS paper you are referencing and they were satisfied.

Also, if the state recognizes the Church then the IRS is automatic. No filing, but just be sure to get a EIN from the IRS.

I have never heard the IRS question any contributor on whether the Church was properly registered as a 501(c)3.
