Many churches do this, many that I have been involved with, all my Christian life. I don't see anything wrong with it, a person is basically asking for prayer for someone else, so everyone prays for that person. The situation you describe usually involves laying on of hands and/or anointing with oil the person who is "standing in" for the other person. I don't think there is anything special about it one way or the other, it's just what I would consider a personal act of faith. Kind of makes me think of this:
Acts 19:11-12 KJV
And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: [12] So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
