Nick, opinions are just that. But YouTubes and all advertising on the Internet, are motivated by your viewing. Your searches. Take YouTubes. Your history is stored within your page, and all your viewing history accumulates. New videos as well as old ones are offered to you as recommendations. Not random, but specific how the algorithm sees you. It's pretty simple. So, if questionable items spring up, then its time to watch who you share your device with.

I looked up "HVAC repair and troubleshooting". Got literally nothing but HVAC vids, with a smattering of vehicle AC vids and one home furnace vid. I clicked on a random HVAC vid to check the recommendations. About 75% were HVAC or AC repair vids. The rest were either music recording/mixing vids or DIY tool vids.
Then THIS showed up in the recommendations. I think the algorithm is trying to get me killed:

Had my oldest son look at some school history videos on there, there were some videos about depression that came up.

While it's true that in some cases they will recommend things that they choose to push, I've never seen it recommend anything that I would find overtly offensive. Most of the feed is related to searches I've done or videos I've viewed. By and large, that's how their algorithm works.

Yes MawMaw, I got to listen to all of Jonathan Alvear on Friday night. And some of Brother Vaughn Morton on Wednesday night. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the heads up.
