Seriously I thought churches boards and such to keep pastors honest in their money dealings when it comes to church monies.
Scott, the primary financial paradigm of the UPC is that the pastor gets the tithes. The pastor makes all the financial decisions and answers to no one. In MANY churches, the pastor gets ALL tithes and the bills are paid out of offerings and tithes if the pastor is so inclined.

The problem I see with this situation is if the $800,000 was designated to a building fund, SFC offering, etc.

About 25 years ago, I was at a church that had a very popular and active single young man about 20 years old, get killed in a motorcycle accident. The idea was made to raise money for a flagpole to be erected as a memorial. Lots of people gave, and it was in the thousands that was raised.

Well, the flagpole was never built, and nobody really knows what happened to the money!

That's right! Pastors don't need some carnal board telling them what to do with the money!

The PRIMARY function of our church board is to set my salary. They have NEVER wanted to keep me poor. I trust these men and they trust me. However, we are not above questioning each other and they are NOT a "yes" board. That keeps me accountable. If the trust level is high, church boards are NOT a threat.

We shouldn't be talking about ANY of them, we should be praying for them. But that's never stopped anyone before.

Sad that this happens, but it does. Probably more often than we know.

Nothing makes them feel that other than to have the large home to entertain guests and have visiting ministers. Plus they feel they have worked hard enough to deserve it. I do not have a problem with any pastor being taken care of, but there is always in excess issue it seems. I think they should drive the best and live in the best, but not steal from the cash cow called the church.

So a limo, Rolls Royce, or Bentley is too much for them to haul and impress their buddies?
