Re: Hell....just how bad is it?
The destruction of the wicked will be nothing pleasant.

Thats how lightly people take sin. They actually believe God would rather have them sin than deny themselves.

Well, ok, but "deny yourself" does not = "pluck your eye out."
Prolly a bit of alliteration to illuminate the seriousness of the matter;
do not take this literally. The point here, imo, is to put the knife to your eye, prepare to pluck it out, and recognize. But BAM, if that does not wake you up...

For what it's worth, you may remember me railing about
how all our Scripture comes thru the Greek, why don't we have
a NT derived directly from Hebrew, etc., a couple months ago...
well, my seeking there led to "God divorced those people, that's why."
Still might be a great link tho.

Its a hyperbole to make a point. But the point is DO NOT COMMIT SIN. If we bow to sin under pressure we have still failed God. Obviously God WOULD rather you cut your hand off than use it to fondle your neighbors wife.
Jesus point is it would be easier NOT to touch the neighbors wife than it would be to cut your hand off.
BUT if thats the only way to overcome you touching your neighbors wife YES he means cut it off.
If all Elders starting teaching this you would see a great reduction in sin.

Evidently no ancient New Testament Hebrew writings of the Apostles have survived. The closest would be the Aramaic Peshitta. It was copied into Greek early on and most surving texts are of that nature.
There are modern Hebrew versions today backtranslated from Greek.

Re: Hell....just how bad is it?
Hell is a place of outer darkness where lost souls weep and wail, gnashing their teeth, in the emotional agony, guilt, shame, and sorrow of a wasted life... knowing the pain they caused those who loved them... and knowing that they are cut off from God. It is here that they reckon with who they truly are, having lied to themselves about being "okay" all their lives. It's here that the reckon with the fact that they chose sin over righteousness. It's here that they discover that they are cut off from family and loved ones. It's here that they realize that their sin has bound them to desires that can only be fulfilled in the flesh. I believe that this is perhaps symbolized best by the lake of fire and brimstone. Perhaps there is a literal lake of fire. Perhaps after the final judgment the lake of fire destroys their bodies and as a result their souls then enter the outer darkness. I don't know.
Some believe that the lost roast in a literal lake of fire forevermore. I have trouble with that position, but it is a valid position. Others believe that God can still reconcile the lost in eternity after they have been corrected, many theologians believe that this too is a valid position.
