I think the best explanation is that it meant if people accidently eat poison or pick up a snake. However the snake handlers, like many Pentecostals, have chosen to take it as the literal meaning of the actual words with no context to place it in.
I think the idea that it was speaking of people inadverdently eating poison or picking up a snake is buttresed by the fact that eating poison and handling snakes was not a practice of the early church recorded anywhere in the Epistles.
We don't have Paul writing to "therefore be swift in thy holding of thine snake and keepest its head away from thine body..." or some such thing as he teaches the church.

Another scripture:
"When handling thine serpent, do so in a meek and quiet manner as to not startle thine serpent. There is a time and season for all things, but shockamooing while handling thine serpent could have grave consequences."

CC1 they hold these snakes open handed where the sanke has liberty to bite them. And I have saw them take their shoes off and stick their foot into the box so the snakes had every chance to bite them.
Now for the passage I do not think you can isolate the passage from Luke 10:19. Coupled together with that I think it makes it clearer.

I don't care what anybody thinks of me, but I WILL NOT handle a snake unless my life or a family member's life is endangered! Hopefully, this wouldn't happen in church!

In the TV news report this thread is about they showed footage of the snake handlers to some college professor who is an expert with snakes. After watching it he said he had no explanation as to why the people were not bit because the snakes did not appear to be drugged or anything.

Well they weren't drugged the night I was there they were striking at folks close by but not those handling them. The pastor had 2 fingers gone where evidently he got out of the Spirit at least once. ![Hee Hee Hee](images/smilies/heeheehee.gif) His brother drank poison and died on the front porch of the church just a couple of weeks before I went. It was a big media story that is why I went. It was in Kingston, Tn.
