Where we lived at for five years before buying this house that is on a 1/2 acre lot I had 3 acres to mow. The first two years we lived there I mowed it with the little 12.5 HP Murray riding mower with a 40" cut. It was just too much for that size engine and at the end of the second summer the engine died.
I then went to Home Depot and got a twin cylinder large HP Murray mower (unbelievable deal for $1200) with a 42" cut. The cut wasn't that much wider but the twin cylinder engine was incredibly smooth compared to that little single cylinder one that used to vibrate me to death. I would have upgraded two years before has I realized the difference!
Then the last month I lived there my mower was in the shop and my neighbor had just bought a used zero turn mower with about a 60" cut. He offered to let me use it and it was a dream. What took me 5 hours to do with my mower took about 1 1/2 hours with that one! If I had stayed there I would have definitely tried to budget for one of those bad boys.
Man those 0 degree turning mowers are nice. I would love to have one of those things. They are kind of expensive but I might try to get one when I finally wear my 19.5 Sears riding mower out. I use the riding mower to cut the lawn and the Lane.
The wife said to me, "Honey, since you have so much to cut out there, I'll just cut the lawn myself." So far, it just is not happening. I will finish cutting "out there" and if the lawn is still not cut, I will get on the old sears riding mower cut it. I will then use the push mower to cut where the riding more can't cut. Then, I'll use my Wal-Mart weed-eater.
It sure takes a lot of equipment to take care of this place.

Cows and a horse. Also two dogs named Beauregard and Stonewall. I intended on getting some Guennies (spelling ?) but waited to late to get the Keats this year.

Dual hydrostatic drive... you gotta love 'em. My son and I drool over them every time we see one. I used to work with them years ago when I worked on a golf course.

Man that would be a dream come true for me to have some land with some cattle on it.
I only have 1-1/2 acres here and we're in town. I did till me a pretty nice garden this year but it still isn't the nice "farm" I would like to have & live on.

I drool over 'em too. Sometimes I wish that I could wear out this 19.5 hp 42" cut Sears so I could then battle the temptation of buying one of those big boys. I love the dual sticks steering system.

You probably have enough work to do already. There is always something to do out here. Cut grass, mend a fence, chop down a tree, gather and burn loads of debris, repair this, fix that, grade the entrance to the driveway, shovel you know what, put out some hay, put out another mineral block, on and on.
I love gardens. I don't have one this year. I was too busy in the city this Spring. Now it is too late. I'll try to have a Fall garden this year though I do not enjoy it nearly as much as a Spring garden. But, that is MORE work.
I actually had spousal blessing to spend six or seven grand on one of those nice zero turn mowers when we had that three acres to mow!!! It was so ironic that she was on board and excited about something expensive I wanted but I didn't have the money in the budget to get it. If we had stayed there I would have found a way though.
At the time I had much more important purchases to budget like my Honda VTX1300R motorcycle!!! LOL.

Yeah cause that Honda does SO much for the lawn!!

You don't have some roots sticking up you could run over a few times?

My Son Jonathan has a big ol' Honda hog-like bike. He came out here on it. Of course, the ol' man had to ride it. Yep! Kind of like riding a bicycle, once you know how, you never forget.
I became the talk of the community though when a bus load of school kids saw me on it. "Look at that old grey headed preacher on that big ol' motorcycle." Everywhere I went for a while, people were mentioning it to me. They don't see too many preachers of any kind riding around on them.
But, if I have the money to spend, and have a choice between a zero turning radius mower or a bike, I'll go for the mower.
I put flotation (very wide) tires on the diesel tractor like what is used on golf courses so as to not chop up the turf with narrow traction tires. It makes the turf look much better when there are no chopped up tractor marks on it. But, I have gotten stuck with it in soft areas because there is no traction to those mostly smooth tires, even though they are very wide. So, I had to put a wench on the front bumper to get myself unstuck a few times. Before I put the wench on, I had to use a come-a-long to pull myself out. That was too much work for an old man...
i wish i lived in a place that needed a real lawn mower. alas I am stuck in the burbs and my walk behind can get the whole thing done in 30 minutes.
and i pay a guy 20 bucks to do that.
I hate city life and county income.
We have a very nice neighbor next door who cuts our grass and works in mom's flower bed. We give him money for the gas mower from time to time, but really he does it 'cause he just loves it.
If he didn't cut it, I of course have brothers who do, so we are blessed...
