Re: What is the purpose of Hell?
Derech... Jesus came to save the world...
John 12:47. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. Will he fail?

Hebrews 7:25. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Christ is able to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him... please note... he EVER LIVETH to make intercession for those who will come to God through Him. That means Jesus NEVER stops interceding for man... not even after death.
Please note the words of Paul...
Romans 8:37-39
37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. God's love doesn't end upon death... God's love is relentless. Christ died to reconcile all souls to himself. Because of the cross Satan wins NOTHING.

The truth is that Jesus preached the Gospel to disobedient souls during his three days in Hell.

If it be this way consider this. Why did he ONLY offer this second chance salvation to the sinners in Noahs time? What about the sinners in Abrahams time? In Jacobs time? In Moses time? In Davids time? In Elijahs time?
Why only Noahs generation supposedly gets a free pass from Hell?

Re: What is the purpose of Hell?
Jesus declared...
John 12:32. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth (meaning be crucified), will draw all men unto me. Christ's cross is what allows for the reconciliation of all men.

Philippians 2: 10-11 Even Satan will bend knee and confess and and I surely doubt he is saved? (Ezek 28:13-19) Thus implies even the wicked wiil bend and confess. This verse comes from Isaiah:
Isaiah 35:20-25 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye [that are] escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god [that] cannot save. Tell ye, and bring [them] near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? [who] hath told it from that time? [have] not I the LORD? and [there is] no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; [there is] none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth [in] righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Surely, shall [one] say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: [even] to him shall [men] come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.
This surely does not mean the whole of creation is saved.

They did not get a free pass, the gospel was preached for over a hundred years while Noah was building the ark, they refuse to hearken, in which only Noah and his family were saved.
Others could have entered into the ark, they refused.

This sounds good but...
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Then of course it goes on to say in Revelation 21 there will be a new Heaven and new earth and so forth and then it says tears will be wiped away(tears?) and all things made new.
There isn't nothing more said about those who are cast into the fire?Seems like if those souls were purified, brought out of the fire, the Bible would mention it.

If all men are saved at the moment of his death, then why does the gospel need to be preached, salvation is no longer an issue.

I believe Noah's time is specifically mentioned here because it is part of an allusion to water baptism. We also read...
1 Peter 4:6
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. Ephesians 4:8
Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. It was more than just Noah's generation.
