Sounds like some want to impose standards on others..............

Conservatives and liberals do the same thing.

I was told something just yesterday by a Pastor that YOU know, and it shocked me. The confusion on my face caused him to say it a second time, and frankly I am still trying to reconcile it.

He said, "The word of God is not God." I understand having a knowledge of scripture and lack the power behind it, but he was almost relating that the spirit is stronger than the word. It was pretty scary in fact, because I was lamenting that kids nowadays have no knowledge of scripture. He was saying it is more important that these kids have a more spiritual conscience than a conscience toward the word.

People say all kinds of dumb stuff...let them, but don't deprive those of us who drink in and absorb what you have to say, and choose to argue once in a while on the basis of scripture.
I have come to see something very glaring in my few years. There are people that really know their Bibles, but don't know God. They can quote, and cite Greek and Hebrew, etc., but they really have no personally vibrant relationship with the Almighty. What reeks is that usually their Bible knowledge is for one purpose: to debate what they and others believe. They have studied for antagonistic purposes--not so they can get a greater understanding of the mind of God.

In this way, I would say, "The Word of God is not God," even though John 1:1 says that in the beginning that the Word was God, and later we see that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.

The danger I see is that we tend to set up a false dicotomy of Word or Spirit and that's wrong. Carp stated that a pastor told him that it was more important to have a spiritual conscience than a conscience toward the word and that is sheer folly. One can't have one without the other. Without the word we are left with no objective standard for truth to thereby justify our experience. Without the Spirit we have dead orthodoxy. In Pentecost, I have to be honest, among the youth there does seem to be a lack of Scriptural knowledge. It's just not 'spiritual' enough.

There is a lack of scriptural knowledge, and a lack of real prayer. Many pray only at church.

And that is in no wise limited to the youth. They kind of "inherited" those things from their elders who let down their guard.
