Yeah. You can actually see the beans turn from a light green to tan to brown, if you watch patiently.

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

HEY LORDCHOCOLATE, are you reading this?????

Well that is just really neat.... When we have a couple of hundred dollars just sitting around with no where to go, we might invest in a roaster! LOL As of right now, even my $5. has someone to go! lol!

So even though you don't get an even roast, you still like it better than store bought coffee? Even the specialty coffee stores? Well, that is interesting.

So, do any of you know if you would actually save money, or spend more money by roasting your own? Sometime when you make things at home, it's cheaper.... but if it comes out to be more expensive, I would only pursue it if it was a hobby....

It probably is even, actually. It looks even, and tastes fine. It's just that the old one swirled the beans around very nicely, and this one has a slower recirculation. Sometimes, if I overload it, it doesn't circulate well at all, and that is a problem. I use a little less than the recommended amount, to make sure, and it's fine.

Quality-wise, it's probably as good or better then pre-roasted from the supermarket, almost always. Doesn't always beat specialty shops, I'm sure, but it saves on gas!

I think it's a little cheaper to roast, but it's not a big deal. Right now, most of the green coffees on sweetmarias are in the $5 to $6/lb range. Not sure how that compares to preroasted, actually. Oh, and a pound of green produces a little less than a pound of roast. Some moisture roasts away.

The best reasons for roasting would be the flavor and freshness, and it's a cool hobby. I love telling our guests "I roasted the coffee this morning!"

Hey Timmy, how is the i-roast for trapping the chaff?

Works OK, but a little tricky to empty. Not bad really, but, again, I miss my old machine! *sniff*

I think they say the I-roast 2 has an improved catcher.

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

I am consummed with weighty tax matters - and locked in the office.

Taking a break.

I have conferred with my people and determined the time to roast some coffee beans is at hand.

Will update shortly.

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

Same here.

Well, except for tax matter consumption (it's not close enough to 4/15 yet), locked in office, taking break, or the conferring. Other than that, same here. Oh, and I don't need to roast, just yet. Maybe tomorrow. But other than that....

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

Well, where's that update? What farm was it? How'd it go? Did you roast to city, Vienna, French? Did it trigger the smoke alarms (done that!)?

BTW, I found a pic of my first roaster (*sniff*):
