Well, thank God for that...it's not that the people aren't generous and good, just seems that the focus for the most part is very much on serving their own.

Many congregations are small thus somewhat limited in what they can afford to do besides helping their own but I have heard many stories that were inspirational during the Katrina and Rita horrors. Not only did Apostolics hlep others but many others helped Apostolics. During those times everyone is an American the most generous nation on the earth.

I can't remember our churches actually reaching out to provide for the physical needs of the less fortunate in the community.

We did provide much love and support for those who regularly attended church. If there was a death in the family, the ladies were on the ball bringing covered dishes and the men helping in any way they could. The congregation surrounds their own with care and concern. That is wonderful and good, but what about those outside the doors of the church?

Our church has made a concerted effort in the last couple of years to reach outside of our doors with charity and giving.

We have multiple ongoing programs to help a needy neighborhood that is close to us, (we help with minor home repairs, touch up painting, yard work, moving people, etc.) and we have assisted the Red Cross in feeding displaced familys during CA wildfires, also our youth group does coat and blanket drives yearly.

The youth do a door to door back to school drive, providing school supplies. They just gave away over 50 turkeys for Thanksgiving to needy familys, and always when we are doing the door to door stuff, they ask if the people have any needs that they can pray with them about, but never is anything asked in return, as far as "come to my church" type of thing.

I think that these types of things are our duty as the church, Jesus made it pretty clear how he felt about feeding and clothing "the least of these".
