Re: I Was Wrong!

But I think Jermyn does have a point. Fervent prayer can be inspiring to others.

I have heard this argument made for the way we worship too... "you may not feel like worshiping, but you never know who is watching..."

While I would not deny there may be residual effects of worship and prayer, I question whether that is worthy of our attention or focus. If it is our focus we should poll the congregation or even the city to discover what is the most appealing/appalling to the crowd... The results might surprise us!

When I first became Pentecostal (switching from conservative Mennonite) I very much bought into the Pentecostal mode of prayer and worship. I inwardly scoffed at the idea of "silent prayer" which my family held as sacred and primarily practiced. I figured, one must not only pray out loud, but there was much greater results when many worshipers prayed very loud at the same time. Surely the level of fervency spoke to their power and standing with God, I reasoned.

Long story short, I no longer believe this. I actually prefer a more orderly approach where meaningful thought is given to what said. I even practice "silent prayer" very often now.
Hoovie, my thoughts on worship / prayer / speaking in tongues publicly have all changed in recent years as I began to look at what the Bible has to say regarding these matters rather than the Pentecostal traditions passed on to me by family, church, and Bible College.

I do not believe that the guidelines in I Corinthians chapter 14, in particular verse 18, are followed by most Pentecostal churches.

It is clear there is a place for speaking in tongues but according to scripture many people speaking in tongues at one time in a church service is not it. Pentecostals have moved corporate speaking in tongues to become a part of corporate worship and the New Testament does not support this.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: I Was Wrong!

Some time ago I tearfully explained to my kid, that I did the best I could with I thought to be The Whole Truth. I explained to her why I enforced the rules and regs ....makes my heart hurt thinking of the years I labored under delusion.

I thank God everyday that I am .... Free at Last.

What works for some, might not work for others. Aren't differences great?

Have you changed your beliefs on something you very adamantly were convinced of in days gone by? Wow! I know I have. It seems life has a way humbling a person. It could be theology or otherwise but it seems we are all on a journey that is shaped by our life experiences - including of course, our experience with the Lord Jesus.

Just the thought... Just knowing I am not what I will be in ten or twenty years is humbling to me. Not that I desire to be fluid in my beliefs or throw caution to the wind at all. But I know that even theologians and scholars are growing, learning and even changing beliefs on things throughout their lifetime.

Help me Lord to stay sober minded. In 2011 May I become humble knowing my weakness is great. May I refrain from judging my fellow man harshly. Amen.
When my dad left the UPC he wrote an article called, "I changed my mind." I'm not sure change means that you were wrong before, it just describes a particular state in your development. Good words "brother"
