What, in your mind, is so significant about the gathering?
Church is different because you are setting a time apart to experience the manifest presence of God. Other social occasions are not for that purpose though you can experience God outside of church.

Wow, and here I thought I experience the manifest presence of God everyday.

My kids (and my husband) having a good experience on Sundays is way more important than whether other people are annoyed with me for being late.

It should have been that way from the beginning, but unfortunately when we get wrapped up in *service*, we can sometimes get our priorities twisted.
I have a theory that
"church was made for people,
people weren't made for church."

Like I told Miss Bratt, I am not advocating following ceremonial law, it's just a nugget of wisdom into entering the presence of God, not a law to follow across the board.

could refer to a "nocturnal emission" or what we call a "wet dream"
or could be from masturbation (a normal sexual practice)
and that could be because he had not engaged in sex with a partner often enough
