Why was the number 14 used?

(Mat 1:17) So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Quick, someone find a Kabbalist to find out what the number 14 means

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

I'm sure they could give you an answer but I don't think I would have much faith in the answer.

Kind of like their explanation of daddy long hair.

"Daddy long hair?"

Matthew does seem to have had a point in arranging things the way he did to arrive at the divisions of 14 generations. He also had to have been aware of the Old Testament genealogies that did not literally match his own. It has been suggested that this may have been simply a mnemonic device.

The doubling of seven (God's "perfect" number) at three different steps seems to almost invite kabbalistic interpretations, but I don't know of any one who even claims to have a definitive answer. I certainly don't have one either.

Maimonides' Mishneh Torah had 14 volumes and is a source of a lot of later kabbalistic teachings; though Maimonides himself seems to have predated much of this lore. The tarot deck has 4 suits of 14 cards each.

The name of God from the Shema has 14 Hebrew letters - "Adonai Eloheinu Adonai." The list goes on.

My verbiage of their doctrine of the Ancient of Days.
