Can you imagine the fear you would feel if you woke up tomorrow and you suddenly had no insurance for yourself, or your children? If the insurance card tucked securely into your wallet was suddenly useless? Your company told you that they could no longer afford to offer insurance, and you knew you could not afford to get it on your own?
It's a scary place to be. And it's where millions of Americans live.
You are not the only one who knows what the word means...shallow culture...that's interesting.
That aside, try taking a poll of the Canadians on this board and see if they believe they live in a socialist country.
If universal healthcare is not the solution, what is?!
I have not heard ONE feasible answer to providing healthcare for all...
With all due respect Barb, if you have not heard the very many alternative ideas then you must not be listening.
the fact is, there are many alternative plans out there that the media and the democrats are ignoring that will go a long way to fixing much of what is wrong with the current system without leading us down the path to a single payer system.
AND I know that Mike is going to say that the presidents plan isnt single payer, but it leads us there (just ask the CEO of Whole Foods or listen to every single democrat leader in congress).
I dont know how many times I have to say that
1. Republicans arent denying the existnance of serious problems with the current American System.
2. Republicans just dont want to create a system with problems we know exist in other places.
As for Canadians not wanting the American system. Well as an American who is opposed to any kind of government run system, I dont want the American system as it is now.
I suspect Canadians (even our own AFF Canadians) recognize the serious flaws in their system and would rather have their system fixed than not.
The issue isnt "lets have their system" for either them or us. The issue is lets fix what is broken without generating a whole new set of problems.

It is scary indeed...
I woke up one morning almost 3 yrs. ago with shingles, and minimal insurance from the temp agency I worked for.
Had no choice but to go to a clinic, and the insurance covered that, but was given a prescription for meds that cost me $200.00.
Thankfully I had a brother I could borrow the money from to get the meds, but what of folks who have a need and no back-up plan?!
Today I have insurance...today.
Let's talk about 'scare tactics' from this side of the road... I work for a company that supplies parts to GM, Ford, and Chrysler, and I never know when that rug will be pulled out from under me.

The gov't doesn't run the postal system?!
The gov't doesn't run Social Security?!
The gov't doesn't run the police or fire departments?!
Respectfully to you, Ferd, most Republicans, and I voted Republican in the last election... but most Republicans don't want this because it is a Democratic president they distrust pushing it.
It's tragic...
I don't doubt your sincerity and am not throwing you in the "most" catagory.
But please know I am listening, Ferd, and I hear nothing of alternatives to giving healthcare to ALL who need it and can't afford it.
Well as an American who is opposed to any kind of government run system, I dont want the American system as it is now.
.
Exactly. I'm just frustrated that nothing has been done to fix our system after years and years of problems.
We no longer live in a day when you could give the doctor a chicken for tending your sick child. Now you're going to give him a check with several zeros, and many people just don't have access to that many zeros.
Since socialism had such a great run in the 20th century, reasonable people are wisely skeptical when we have enjoyed 233 years of democracy & freedom. We are rightfully dubious of countries whose track records have been less than stellar on human rights, freedom and individual liberties. It took Europe a little while after 1776, but after WWII and the Cold War the idea of freedom finally caught on.
So yeah socialism is a bit scary when we've done pretty well for so long.
233 years of democracy & freedom????? Don't you mean WHITE MAN FREEDOM
In 1964 Blacks and Mexicans, born in the US, who served in the US Army could not set down and eat with a White man in Big Springs Texas. You call that FREEDOM???? They could not drink from the same water fountain. They could not set in the front of a bus. How about the pole tax FREEDOM.
How about the FREEDOM of the NATURAL BORN NATIVES of America.
How about "THE Patriot ACT" That FREEDOM Stealing act was perpetrated by none other that the man who said he would like to be a dictator. G. W. Bush.
The gov't doesn't run the police or fire departments?!

The Post Office is a mess and anyone using that as a reason to have government run healthcare is not going to get a lot of support.
Social Security is bankrupt and most folk my age dont even believe it will be around when we retire.
The fire department isnt run by the federal government Barb. What a silly notion to include that in this discussion.
and you could not be more wrong about why Republicans dont want this. If a republican proposed a government run healthcare option, he would be run out of the party.
Republicans have offered MANY market based solutions to many of the problems we face with healthcare. NONE of those offerings include a gov. option.

Cut me some slack, Ferd...I'm typing while trying to get ready for work.

I would be interested in what you view as the "serious flaws" in the Canadian system.
From my point of view, our greatest challenges are:
The baby boomers - an aging population and a correponding reduction in the work force supporting social programs.
Increasingly expensive technologies and treatments. Medicare was created in a time when medical care was much simpler than it is now.
The sustainability of our system depends upon our finding innovative solutions to these perplexing problems.
