My point is that you accused me, personally, of giving ex-UPC'ers a bad rap, and of saying that nothing is a sin, and that current UPC members aren't even in Christ.

So, Pastor Sherri, I think DG's and Michlows posts help contribute to the Bad Rap theory, no?

Nothing is a sin, and standard keeping churches may not even live "in" Christ, sheeesh
An apology and a correction to your original post would be nice.

There is legalism and works-based religion in many denominations, not just Apostolic/Pentecostal/UPC.

Re: This Is Why We Get a Bad Rap!!

Did she use any words that the pastor from Gainesville doesn't use in his sermons?

Vulgarity isn't a reflection of past or present church membership - it's a heart and a head problem.

This psycho-babble about strict upbringing and newfound liberty is silly.

My statement stands. I did not say everyone who leaves but this seems to be true in too many cases. They are back slidden and don't admit it.

Those were Sherri's concerns.
Well, whether it was needed or not, I felt like offering it. I felt that Dordecht's post was accusing her of backbiting.

One more thing. I see no need to use bad language even if I smash my finger! OUCH that hurts is enough!!
Now this is typical of the propaganda spread about people who leave the UPC. Are you suggesting that because a person leaves "standards" or the three-step new birth formula that God is through with them? Do you really believe that the UPC is so right that leaving might cause people to head in the wrong direction?

I gave an explanation of why I thought this behavior was common with people who leave the UPC or other Oneness organizations. I am not attacking the UPC but suggesting that there is a problem that should be discussed and addressed.

Congratulations!

I, for one, admire a person who will make a dumb statement and then stand by it.

Thankfully the cursing preacher's wife is not representative of people that have left the UPC, and you are not representative of the vast number of wonderful people who are UPC.

The following words are not swear words, but I doubt you would disagree that they can be used sinfully:

fat, stupid, ugly, moron, idiot, imbecile, cow, loser, retarded....etc...
What I can't figure out is when it is possible to use certain obscenities in a manner in which they are inoffensive.

The words you offered, I agree they are mostly offensive. We don't allow our children to use stupid, loser, retarded, etc., and I can't think of very many times when we would allow them to use the other words you listed, either.

I will agree that the words in and of themselves don't possess an inherent sinful nature. LOL!!!! That would be in the mouth of the speaker. (or not) Personally, I don't like to hear or read a lot of curse words either. I find that they get into my brain and tend to vie for verbal use, and so if I want to avoid using curse words, I need to protect my eyes and ears from them as well.

What's down in the well comes up in the bucket and all that. At the same time, I know that curse words are just part of some folks' culture, it's just how they talk. So I don't necessarily judge the state of a person's heart or their motives based on what language they use. Or, at least, I try NOT to be exceedingly judgmental. I am offended by obscene language in my presence, and so it's a bit of a balancing act. I wouldn't hesitate to ask someone not to use a word in front of me, or especially in front of my children.

Well then your point would be incorrect. I never accused you of saying anything about upc members. You came up concering your post about words being sinful or not.
