Actually it was two years and Insulin resistant diabetes ago. While still riding the bike 10 miles a day, eating a controlled diet, and working out 5 to 6 times a week in the gym I gained 40 pounds. that happened in less than two months. I then gained yet another 13 pounds over then next month.

I went from 232 pounds and a 36 inch waist to a high of 285 pounds and a 44 inch waist from September to mid January.

Once the diagnosed my diabetic condition it took two more months to get the medication right. Since March I have dropped from 283 to 252. From 44 inch waist to a 40 inch waist. I still have 40 more pounds I want to lose. It is a battle that never stops with the issue of insulin resistance.

CC1, you should check into it.... they told me it causes weight gain right around the middle (gut and rear end specifically) and you certainly seem to have the symptoms.

Oh and CC1, look at the first picture.. it is more accurate.. the folded arms and the posture of shaming Dan made me look bigger than I really am! (self deception is an art)

Philjones,

Sorry to hear about the diabetes. Now that you mention it I think I remember you posting about it awhile back.

Good to hear you are still doing the cardio exercise and the weight gain is not from becoming a couch potato like myself!

That must be incredibly frustrating to still be working out so much and to have seen the weight gain still continue. I am glad they appear to have your medicene at the right level and the weight is going down.

I have had my blood sugar level checked before and all was fine but it has been awhile. My weight gain has not been sudden though. Mine was from marrying a Southern cook 27 years ago. I gained an inch in my waist each of the first five years of my marriage.

Insulin resistant diabetics have pretty normal blood sugar readings... usually in the 95 to 120 range... that are not alarming. Their problem is not that their bodies do not produce insulin, rather that they do not utilize the insulin the body does produce. This results in higher than normal insulin levels which signals the liver to produce more sugar in the blood to offset the excess insulin which signals the pancreas to secrete more insulin and the cycle goes and goes and goes until the pancreas wears out and full blown insulin dependent diabetes occurs.

Insulin resistance requires going a step beyond the fasting blood sugar. Next time you have blood work done, ask them to perform this test. You might be surprised. It usually takes two or three high insulin readings to get a confirmed diagnosis.

Insulin level test I guess... when they do a fasting blood sugar they can also request that the pathology lab measure the insulin level in your blood.

It's a fasting blood sugar. Normal range is 70-110.

There is another blood test called a Hemoglobin A1-C. Which is a better indicator of of whether one is a Diabetic or not.
