Prophecy as a charistmata is primarily for exhortation, edification, and comfort. This doesn't mean someone cannot accurately speak of the future, because that can and does happen, but as far as the future is concerned regarding epic, apocalyptic, world-changing events are concerned, I think the Bible already has that covered.

A prophecy therefore, might serve to exhort us to heed the Holy Scriptures on such topics, or edify our faith in the Word of God, or comfort us by reminding us of what has already been written.

More than that is precarious at best, soul destroying at worst.
