Re: Emergent Church
My personal opinion of the little I hear about it is not too good...I do not agree with a lot of their (most) thinking...I am all for love but for the BIBLE concept of love...

Sis. Alvear, if you are referring to me, I will edit my post. I've been here a while but still not sure of all the rules. I apologize.

"extreme of liberal"....I wonder if the traditional Jewish leaders/teachers thought this about Jesus or his followers...just a thought.
Regarding sin....I would think that during your research you would've come accrossed people writing about how it is the obligation of Christ followers to feed the hungy, protect to innocent....and essentually contiue out the work of Christ here on planet earth? These are pretty much "staples" of most EC....many EC believe that if you are not doing this...then you are not truely following Christ. I'm not sure they call in "sin"....but I don't think its a good thing.
Regarding lifestyle....are we saved because of our lifestyle? Thats probably a whole different topic.
Again...I am not an EC apologist or one of their theologians...but I believe many of them believe that we are saved by grace...through faith...and not by works....any works...even good works.
IMO...Jesus said that he had only 2 commands to have eternal life....love God with everything you are....and love your neighbor as yourself....thats it. If someone chooses to add to that...then I believe they will have to discuss that with Him.

Re: Emergent Church
I have read through most of this thread- I have been watching this emergent church movement from the outside and trying to get a grasp on it. I have a couple of thoughts on the matter:
I have no problem with relaxed clothing at church, and a more relaxed atmosphere - we need to reach the lost.
I fear that the emergent church is just another label for the charismatic.
I think we as an organization ( UPC) is undergoing a real time of change- and many of the man made foundations are crumbling. I just hope that the change that is brought about by men and women that are God centered, God directed, and Spirit led. As a church we do need to refocus our purpose on bringing the Gospel to the lost- That should be our primary purpose- Can you honestly say that is the primary purpose of the church you attend?

Thank you for saying this! That's it... from soup to nuts!
I can tell you, though, that in my experience (UPCI/ALJC for 25 years) I can honestly say that what I've seen most was the principle of "bring the lost to the gospel" -- in our controlled environment, where we can script everything. Notice the difference! The focus was always to "get them to church (building)," when it should have been "take the Church (us) to them." I don't think that's what Jesus meant when he said "GO! Preach the gospel to every creature!"

I did, and I understand what you're saying. I'm just wondering, though, if this means the same thing in the context of what we're talking about here - Romans 14:22's original post and the Way of Life Community.

Blessings, Sis. A!
What names do you mean? Did I miss something? Just wanted to make sure my posts were not what you were questioning.
