Exactly - very apparent.

You're really going overboard with this "balance" thing.

Seeking "balance" for the sake of always wanting to "balance things out" is not always appropriate.

There are significant contextual and situational differences between what McCain said when he said it, and what Obama said when he did.
I was not just talking about McCain's lipstick line, I mean in this whole election in general. I have seen both sides take a position or phrase that the other side used and turn it in an obvious jab. It is juvenile to me, but also very common and done on both sides, so yes, I am wondering about balance on this thread.

Exactly. Everything he says on the stump is gone over with a fine-toothed comb by his team. They go over their lines, sound bites, talking points etc. Its all tightly controlled.

The Dali Bama knew what he was saying. It was a clear double entendre. But this time, he miscalculated badly.

He tried to make a backhanded slap at Palin, and it backfired on him. Now he's been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he's acting all surprised and offended at the reaction to his comments.

Two words for O'Bambi: SPARE ME!!

Just own up to it and make it even.
I watched his tirade where he defends his actions without apology. EVEN IF he didn't mean it, he should apologize for making it seem that way.....an action he refuses to take, and pretty much said so today. He said to let us think what we want to think....

And we are.

I agree 100%

If Obama's people were smart, they could have taken the high road with a simple statement, and just moved on. Something like:
"I have great respect for Gov. Palin. I do see how my comments yesterday could have been misconstrued as being insulting to the Governor. However, no harm was meant by those comments; however I apologize if any offense was caused. I look forward to focusing on the issues that Americans are concerned about, as we draw closer to election day."
If he had done something like that, story would have died a lot quicker... instead of being an albatross around his neck for an entire day (maybe two). I think the man is getting bad advice.

Re: Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig' comment. Not Smart.

HaHa!! I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on an apology for a harmless remark.

I'm not understanding what he should apologize for. Obama's remarks in context.

"John McCain says he's about change too. So, I guess his whole angle is watch out George Bush. Except for economic policy, healthcare policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove style politics, we're really gonna shake things up in Washington. That's not change. That's just calling the same thing, something different.

But you know you can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig."

The phrase was used with the exact same connotations as John McCain used it against Hillary Clinton. Both we're accusing their opponents of portraying something as different than it actually is.

He's supposed to issue an apology for that?

Obama's "change" is just an old Clinton policy. Nothing new happening here.

O'Reilly told him his tax plan was "redistribution" and a socialist policy. That's what the Democrats are to me. Perhaps if they didn't have such horrible newscasters and people like Michael Moore and George Soros representing them, I might listen. As it stands, I don't.

You're totally missing the point, buddy.
He doesn't have to apologize if he doesn't want to. It would just be smart politically if he did.

He can just keep being defiant like he's been so far on this... even though that clearly hasn't helped to put the fire out. This episode is not doing him a bit of good... and it might have cost him tens of thousands of independent and undecided voters... voters he may never get back.

But let him keep doing what he's doing....
...It's fine with me, actually.

Re: Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig' comment. Not Smart.

IMO, the point of this whole scuttlebut is in the long run, this has little or no effect on voters. This will all be forgotten and old news in 55 days.

This election is going to be won or lost on issues and who is on the right side of those. It's a dead heat and the fun is just beginning. The next 55 days are going to be fun to watch.

Re: Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig' comment. Not Smart.

I prefaced my earlier comment by admitting that I may be missing the point of the thread. I was not sure if the issue was with what Obama initially said or what he has said since...I'm actually still not sure . Either way, I have not heard all of his reactions since he said it, but I am genuinely surprised at some people's reaction to his initial comments. They have been doing this back and forth thing the entire election. One side will say something that resonates well with their base and the other side would find a way to flip it into a jab. I don't see what the big deal is. I heard Palin herself make many a jab and play on Obama's catchphrases and other things.

If "putting lipstick on a pig" was not an old, established phrase then I may feel that he was being much more juvenile than the other juvenile behavior, but as it stands I really don't see the big deal or difference.
