Re: Bombshell- Considering going back to the UPC

This is a very interesting thread. We have just started going to a UPC church again after a couple of years at other churches. Your reasons for considering going back are like ours. We instantly connected with the pastor and his wife as people, and we had never been to their church before. I already told the pastor's wife that I don't wear pants all the time. The sky did not fall... lol
My daughter wears jewellery to their church and dresses like herself... not a clone. My husband wears 3/4 pants to church sometimes, and the boys all wear t-shirts. I respect that fact that the people we go to church with are dressing as they do to honour God. I just don't have the conviction to take it to that level, and I am so happy that we are back in a oneness church, with good and kind people as our leaders, and taking it one day at a time.

It will be interesting to see how it goes over time. Keep us posted!

Re: Bombshell- Considering going back to the UPC

I wonder if returning to a UPC church after a few years is not unlike hooking back up with an ex-girlfriend that you had broken up with either months or years ago. There is often an instant connection based on familiarity as well as memories of the good times, however the memories of the bad times, or in the case of the church, the reason you left, soon resurface.

VERY interesting thread!

Best of luck to you Jason, and I pray it works out in a good way. I agree with almost all your thoughts in the original post, and pretty much have for the 27 years that I attended a UPC (for a short time ALJC).

Hoovie, are you still attending a UPC church? You uses the word "attended" which indicates past tense.

You can attend a lot of UPCs like that but they won't allow you in leadership positions

  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

This assumes everyone wants to be in leadership. Some people are just happy being saints in the pews.

I find Jason's topic to be very timely because I just this week started going back to a UPC here in the great Southwestern USA. My experience is that recently I’ve had some health problems which have really thrown me for a loop. (I complained to my coworkers that my body felt alien.) The pastor of that church has really been supportive of me even though I’ve been a VERY VERY OCCASIONAL attendee (try maybe a half-dozen AT MOST times in the last four years) and I really appreciate that.

And, I should note, since the pastor put my name on the prayer list, I have felt REENERGIZED. Yeah, the medication probably helped, but I was on it five days and it wasn't doing anything for me and then *whomp* everything started working the way it's supposed to on Monday night. Thank you Jesus!

I gave it a lot of thought and decided I was mature enough now that I’m my own person to where I’m not going to be swayed by every wind of doctrine, as it were. (I'm not a teenager looking for approval from elders I respect, either.) If I want to wear slacks, I'll wear slacks. If I think it’s time to trim my hair, I’m going to do that. If I think I need to rock out to the Rolling Stones while I’m cleaning my house—as long as the Holy Spirit is in agreement, I don’t think there’s a problem. If I do have issues, and I am VERY SURE I will, knowing me, I will take it to Jesus, instead of going off into a snit.
