People who say "Im beside myself" are mistaken, with the notable exception of time travelers and siamese twins.

In fact I think that the insinuation of "hateful" Pentecostals is coming mostly from the fertile imaginations of bitter, backslidden ex Apostolics who are constantly trying to find a way to justify their actions. ~ strait shooter
Hebrews 11 lists several glowing examples of faith. Like Abel's faith that he made a good offering. (We must assume that Cain didn't have faith for his own offering.) And the faith Isaac used in blessing his sons, Jacob and Esau. (Heck of a "blessing" for Esau!) And the faith of Jephthah. (Too bad the author didn't have time to tell us what his faith accomplished. We know that he asked God to deliver the Ammonites into his hands, which He did, and we know that Jeph offered his daughter as a burnt offering. And we read that none of the people mentioned received their promise. Uh. OK.)
Hebrews 11 also defines "faith" for us. It is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hoping for something? If you have faith for it, that's the evidence. If you don't see it, faith is its substance. Sometimes, it will be the only evidence or substance that hoped for thing will ever have. But maybe you will make it into the second edition of the Faith Hall of Fame.

God is no respecter of persons. Do we have agreement, here, that this means He doesn't "play favorites"? That everyone has an equal opportunity to find salvation, for example?

Nah. It doesn't mean he doesn't have favorites. God has had favorites. Sometimes he would even love one brother and hate the other. All that verse means is that God doesn't pick his favorites based on things like wealth, fame or power.

God can time travel, so he knows who he likes best in advance.

Hmm. That kinda makes sense!

So, anyway, you're right, of course. God plays favorites. Always has, and even today, only a select few (keyword: "select" ) find the way to salvation. It's the ones God chooses, according to some scriptures (which I'm too lazy to find, right now ).
For the most part, people born in the "wrong" part of the world and/or the wrong time in history are 100% not selected for salvation. It's not 100% saved, though, even in the "right" place and time. I mean, look at me!
Anybody think this is weird?

Nah it's not weird...
It just means God left it up to people for the most part. Here's an interesting comparison for you Timmy: God put man in the garden and dangled a tree in front of him called the knowledge of good and evil. If man had never eaten of that tree then he would have lived forever.
That's almost like what happens to those that have never heard the gospel of Christ where the gospel of Christ is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
