Others have offered apologies for similar or less things and were not forgiven because they did not join the left. Trent Lott was destroyed because he said he thought a sitting Senator would have made a great President, all because that Senator was a segregationist at the time he ran for President in 1948. Lott was only honoring the man at his 100th birthday party. not endorsing segregation. Oh but that didn't matter! I guarantee if Strom Thurmond has become another Bernie Sanders, nothing would have been said about his segregationist past.

Trent Lott had other issues going on too. I have read articles that claim that Lott's political destruction actually came at the hands of some of his own fellow Republicans.

That does happen from time to time.

Lott is a globalist hack. But I lost all respect for him over his inability to defend himself over false charges of racism.

The Supreme Court seems to side with FREEDOM for the individual and I don't think that freedom for the individual is a bad concept. In fact, it is that freedom that forms the foundation of our great country.

Freedom of the individual-- not freedom of the State government.

The freedom to govern ourselves is the most important freedom we have.

The Supreme Court's decision circumvented our ability to govern ourselves by reading concepts and ideas into the constitution that just aren't there.

Heck, the majority decision given by the Supreme Court in this case even celebrates it's ability to be progressive and expand existing laws beyond their original intent.

But getting back to the main point, individual freedoms are celebrated in this country. But don't put the cart before the horse. It's our freedom to govern ourselves that birthed these great individual freedoms. They are simply byproducts that are obtained when we the people govern ourselves.

Realizing such, it's hard to watch our true freedom and originator of freedoms slowly being taken away (the freedom to govern ourselves). IMO, no short term win in the individual freedom category is worth sacrificing any of our freedom to govern ourselves.

When dealing with slavery the government didn't try and say slavery was something it was not. Instead the government acknowledged what slavery was and that it wasn't right, fair or good and did away with it.

However, when dealing with marriage we have the supreme court declaring that marriage can be between a man and a man or a woman and a woman when it can never be. As such all the government is doing is calling things marriages which aren't really marriages. IMO, if two gays tell you they are married look at them strangely and say it's impossible, marriage only ever takes place between a man and a woman regardless of what the state or supreme court says.

Since marriage is between a man and a woman then the court should have ruled that any laws pertaining to marriage was unconstitutional because same sex couples can't become married since they cannot meet the requirements of marriage. The court whiffed and overreached. It cannot say gay marriage is legal. It can only say that state laws which only allow heterosexual marriages are unconstitutional. The state then gets to choose how it wants to comply, it can change it's legal definition of marriage to be inclusive of same--sex couples or it can stop issuing marriage liscenses altogether.
