Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

I pointed out this past Sunday that we are strangers on earth and if we don’t feel that we are strangers when in the company of the lost, then we need to review our relationship with God.

This is simple Christian teaching. That doesn’t mean we need to avoid all the places those outside the Family of Faith go, nor does it mean we should avoid all the things those outside the Family of Faith do. What it does mean is that we must first recognize who we are in Christ and let that govern our involvement.

Why is this so hard? What I find is that this kind of teaching is either ignored by the so-called saints, or it is abused and turned into a list of things we must collectively all adhere to. This is just as bad as NOT TEACHING ANYTHING! Why would I spend 5 minutes telling someone to avoid football games when that person has no inclination that would lead sporting events to become engrossing? It is nonsensical. What I must tech is the RULE. Take care of the things you spend your time on. Insure that your focus on the things of God is not diminished by your attachment to the things of this world.

When I teach the principle and leave the application in the hands of the Child of God, and leave the expectation that the child of God will follow the Spirit, then I have done the needful and the saint will grow in maturity. If all I do is give them a list of things to do and not do, then I insure the saint remains stuck and immature and incapable of hearing the voice of God and growing. Paul was very clear on the point. He detested the notion of saints remaining immature.

WHAT?!

The problem is not with the sport, rather with the intent of the heart.

We can make a god out of anything...even our convictions.

Bottom line...if someone is obsessed with hockey or whatever, it is not the fault of the hockey stick and jersey.

I agree with Ferd...

I encouraged him to listen to the conviction he felt. That Sunday night he came into the sanctuary weeping during prayer and was clutching his hockey stick and a San Jose Sharks jersey to his chest. Hmmmmm.... Interesting...... Watching hockey highlights was a sin? What was he watching them on???? Most preachers would have been aghast at the fact that he was able to "watch" the highlights.'

Well, they wouldn't have been aghast at him "watching' them IF he clarified that he was watching on the internet and not a TV. ...... Hypocritical of them if that was the case.

Why are you judging this young man? I never told him to do anything other than follow his conviction. I do preach against being wrapped up in sports so if one watches highlights after every game then I would consider that individual to be wrapped up in sports and therefore going against what I preach. It is my responsibility as a minister of the Gospel to set boundaries for my sheep!

Plygn, I dont think sweetpea was judging..They were just stating that most Pastors that knock sports will also preach against a TV, which is how you watch the Sports, unless you have the Internet. See Plygn if you was a good preacher you would get your sheep to throw out there TV's so they cannot watch the activity, see the TV is the problem not the sports..You need to get your flock to bring there TV's to the alter.

The two bolded parts of your post are a contradiction. If you preach against sports then most likely the conviction came from you, not God.

If one watches highlights after every game? Ok to watch the game but if you keep it on to see the highlights your in sin?

You only watch the highlights of a game for one reason, because you missed the game. I watch highlights of games that come on during church times because I will not choose staying home to watch a game over going to church. Am I in sin?

They are neither your sheep, nor does scripture ever spell out that the job of a NT Pastor is to set any boundaries. They are God's sheep and the Pastor, as well as the rest of the 5 folds, job is to preach the word and be an example. The word says diddly hot squat about football, hockey, or any other sport or spending a few minutes checking scores to see if your team won a game or not.

I would go against what you preach, because once you leave the word of God...you no longer have any authority. I cannot believe they don't teach things this simple in bible college. Your only authority is the word and when you go outside the word you no longer have any authority, unless you have manipulated the people into giving you authority where you don't deserve it.
