Re: Screaming Preaching?

I believe that preaching/teaching is an art and a craft....and in my tradition(UPCI) far too few study to be good at it. Instead of crafting a well thought out, well prepared, talk...many simply read a verse, tell a Bible story about that verse....and then scream they are glad they believe in 1 God....can I get an "Amen". Good grief!!

If you believe that God has called you to communicate His word to others (specifically pulpit ministry)...then for heaven's sake become a skilled communicator!! Don't just rely on one form/style...learn all of them...learn how to use them effectively.

IMHO....few things are as enjoyable as a good sermon, being delivered by a skilled communicator that is anointed by a great God. For me....it doesn't get much better than that.

The books that made the most difference for me was "Communicating for a Change" by Andy Stanley ... which he explains why he preaches 1 point sermons... no multipoint sermons. And "Sticky Church" by Larry Osborne where he gets into how to structure home small groups midweek to center on the sermon notes and application. Stanley runs about 9000 and Osborne runs about 6000... not a bad place to learn from.

This is where I have a disconnect with my heritage/upbringing. I can honestly say that I have never in my life enjoyed a sermon... and I grew up in the UPC. I went to church at least 3 or 4 times a week from the time I was born until I was around 16 (when I got my first job and finally had an excuse to miss).

No sweat. You can always just resort to the tried-and-true memorized gibberish that most use! Everyone around you will go crazy and they'll pronounce you "Saved"!

Re: Screaming Preaching?

Did anyone ever have one of those ladies in church who would wait until a really quiet moment and then scream really loud "in the spirit"? She sat right behind me for a couple of years...

Yeah I know what you mean. I can hear the ringing of the "tongues" in my ears from years past and the mind being the super computer the mind is it hears something like that and it stores it for reuse. I am sure I could start speaking in tongues now, but it wouldn't be genuine so I am not going to do it. There is NO WAY I would do that. I respect the move of the HG too much to do that.

I wonder how many of us Pentecostals speak in tongues as the brain gives the utterance instead of the spirit giving the utterance?

Not a lady, but had a man that every "praise God" or "amen" Started at his toes in a slow rumble that apexed at a loud point. It was like "aaaaaammmmmmeeeeeennnnnnNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
