No, however Norton virus protection has been a piece of junk for years. However Randy says the new one is rather spiffy :-)

I have had my share go bad and they can cause weird, seemingly random problems as well. The other thing is resetting the CMOS which is usually done by bridging a couple of pins on the motherboard for a few seconds.
Ok that's what Im hoping, thanks

What a pain trying to install, apparently my HP recovery discs won't work because I have a new drive & another XP Home edition I installed to make it work will not let me register
because my registry key on my computer is for a media centre edition 2005!!!

I have a new drive, the old drive says "boot disc error please insert disc & press enter."

The recovery disc won't work & my key doesn't work.

Ron...I know you have a new drive. Im asking how does the recover disk now work? What happens? What do you mean my key does not work?

Did you remove the old drive?

What happens when you use the recovery disk?

You have to give details

Remove the old drive. Install the new. Make sure it is plugged in securely both power and the data cable.

Turn the PC on. Open the CD tray. Put Recovery CD in. Turn the PC off. Wait 10 seconds. Turn it back on

Re: Anyone Ever Replace A Hard Drive?

Or Ron, you could just buy a new box. I bought this laptop from Best Buy for little over 300 bucks last month, works great, that HP system o yours is pretty old and dated, if the hard drive is failing, if that is in fact the problem, then it isn't long before other stuff croaks as well.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Compaq+-...&skuId=9755437

While true it isn't a "powerhouse I run Adobe CS4 on it with no probs, plenty fast.

My sister and brother in law just did this very thing. They replaced an ancient desktop with a new HP from Sams club that runs circles around their old one. It was $599 with a 20 inch monitor. It is still not a powerhouse by any means but several times more powerful then what they had.
