If you've ever seen any movie classics from the 40's and 50's, it just meant saying sweet nothings in someone's ear.

But, I do remember my sister visiting church with me. She was praying at the altar and an elderly woman was praying with her. She said, "Make love to him!" She totally stopped praying. LOL!

Not a good term to use today, but the older generation meant nothing nefarious by it.
Well, this sermon took place over 20 years, and I can assure you it was about sex.

I'm not sure I buy into the "making love" hasn't always meant physical love making.

PO are you sure that's just what your parents told you when you asked, "what do they mean making love?" Parent's answer, "ah, honey they are just whispering sweet nothings in each other's ear!"

Grace Livingston Hill books contained the phrase 'making love', and it just meant 'whispering sweet nothings'. Those books were so clean they squeaked, so it definitely meant something different back then.

This is what I have always understood it to mean back in the day.

Renda,
Watch some of the old classics from the 40's and 50's. Well, forget James Cagney, he's rough. LOL!

In the 1950's, what did the phrase "make love" mean?

I am an avid watcher of classic films, and am always a little shocked to hear an actor/actress use the phrase "make love." I'm watching "Indiscreet" right now, and the tagline for the movie was "How dare he make love to me - and not be a married man!" Was the connotation the same then as it is now?

Answer:

I don't think it had the same connotation, at least when it was used in movies and songs. I've heard this phrase used in much older movies, too. Usually, the man would speak romantically to the woman, and then the woman would ask if he was "making love" to her. It appears from this that the phrase meant to speak intimately and romantically to someone, complimenting their eyes, hair, etc., and maybe declare their love.

So all this time, that's all Rhoni meant when she was talking about on the sofa with her lover? !
