My understanding was that the check was an intentional bogus check, likely for the purpose of proving the extortion case. I believe that at the time the check was given, law enforcement was already involved.
I too wondered why a relatively successful man would try to do this, but I guess he just saw the chance at a big payday and took it.
As to the reason he thought Letterman would be willing to pay such big money just to cover a simple affair:
a) Apparently Letterman wasn't.
b) It may be conceivable that someone of Letterman's stature would pay significant money to cover even a simple affair...especially if there are compromising pictures, correspondence, voice mail etc,
I agree that they knew they could get Halderman on extortion. I'm thinking, possibly, that Letterman's view was - If you take me down, you are going down with me.

That's what I read in a story yesterday. The check was actually printed by the U.S. Attorney's office and then given to Letterman's lawyers to give to the extorter.

Proof once again that often times, people who speak about a certain issue with an apparent obsessiveness are often guilty of partaking of that issue.
And other talk show hosts are making fun of him. Leno told his audience that if they were looking to have sex with a talk show host, they were in the wrong studio. LOL!
Another one said that there is a book about 237 reasons why women have sex, and Dave knows the top ten.
I never liked the guy anyway. Not even his sense of humor.

Personally I have not cared for Dave Letterman. I do like Jay Leno's monologue and his Jaywalking but haven't really watched him for a while. I haven't seen any of the others like Conan or Bill Maher. What few quotes I've seen from Bill Maher here and there I don't think I could watch him.
I'm wondering - If Letterman did nothing that most men don't do in the workplace and he wasn't married, what did Halderman have on him worthy of blackmail?
Nothing but a diary he stole from Letterman's ex-girlfriend (who was Halderman's girl at the time) and a ton of debt.
Letterman may be a jerk to conservatives, but he did nothing legally wrong with these women. Yes, morally he was a playboy as a single adult ... but honestly in todays secular society, that's not abnormal or wrong.
Letterman made a public apology last night to the people he works with, and also to his wife who he said would have a long way to go to forgive him. I'm sure it was something he was "told" to do, but at least he did acknowledge the seriousness of his mistakes. I don't ever watch him anymore, but just happened to be flipping through the channels when this came on.

Can we really allow "todays secular society" to define abnormal or wrong? BTW, most of the people I know, Christian or not, still think adultery is "wrong".

As Christians we shouldn't ... just pointing out that what Letterman did, wasn't against the law, nor was it different than what a lot of men in his position do...
And Letterman wasn't married at the time ... he didn't commit adultery. Fornication, yes, but not adultery.
