This endorsement is exciting to the liberal news media b/c they love anyone who defects from the GOP or is a liberal Republican.
It should be just as significant that the former Democrat VP candidate from 2000 endorsed McCain for prez. It should be as significant that over 200 former generals have endorsed Mac. It should as notable that Kissinger, Haig, Baker, Eagleberger (Clinton admin) former Secretary's of State have endorsed Mac. But that doesn't register on the radar screen with the biased media or at least given equal attention.
Colin Powell is respected. He was a great Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He worked well as Secretary of State. He is known for having done well as the CJC during the first Gulf War. He is known for making the case before the UN for WMDs in Iraq as a basis for ending the cease-fire against Hussein. What else is he notable for? He was notable for being a black Republican. He does not have the heft of Kissinger.
How many former generals are endorsing Obama? What percentage of military members are polling in favor of BO? You could bet your bottom dollar that if 200 former generals were supporting BO, it would be all over the news all of the time. If the polling among our troops was in BOs favor, we would know about it.
This is more Liberal Media's overhyping a moderately significant, yet in context, no more important endorsement than what Mac has received.
Here's the big inside scoop: (whispering) (BO is a liberal Democrat running for President and, you'll be shocked at this, the New York-based media and Hollywood are ga-ga over him)

Not surprisingly, Obama just said Powell will have a place in his administration:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential adviser in an Obama administration, the Democratic White House hopeful said Monday.
"He will have a role as one of my advisers," Barack Obama said on NBC's "Today" in an interview aired Monday, a day after Powell, a four-star general and President Bush's former secretary of state, endorsed him.
"Whether he wants to take a formal role, whether that's a good fit for him, is something we'd have to discuss," Obama said.

Conservatives no doubt feel justified in their wariness about the retired general and Secretary of State, who declared himself a Republican when he retired from the Army in the 1990s. At the time, Powell had described his distaste for cultural conservatives in the Republican Party and likened his Republicanism to that of the late New York governor and liberal GOPer Nelson Rockefeller. It should be no surprise that someone cut from that cloth should follow such liberal GOPers as former Environmental Protection Administrator William D. Ruckelshaus and former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman William Donaldson into the Obama camp.

Why because he is black??? That's the reason Pat Bucannon gave!
No, not because he's black. (And why should I even care about Pat Buchanan anyway?)
Dont assume.
Anyway, I'm not going to further dignify that comment.

This is good news for the country, IMO. Colin Powell would be an asset to either McCain or Obama. This country needs that kind of steady leadership during times like these.
Who a President surrounds himself with is the succeed or fail issue of any presidency. We all know that the last 8 years, would have certainly been different minus people like Wolfowitz, Cheney, and Rumsfeld.

Man, I had never seen that. I really do wish that it was Powell running for President. He seems to have a perspective that is rooted in reality.
Tstew I think he has become all politics.
My Mom always says if they are not crooked when they go in they are when they come out. Sad but seems to be true way to often.

Esther, I do agree that the political games and the power system tends to corrupt. I certainly cannot speak for Powell, and I do recognize that there could be some shady business going on like I do with all politicians regardless of party or color. I will just say that in listening to some of his statements ,not only recently in this campaign but over the course of the last several years, and in the way he parted ways with the Bush administration, I believe that he is genuinely troubled by some of what he saw in the past administration and how some things were handled in a lot of different areas. I've heard him say some things that would lead me to believe that he has genuinely grown apart from the direction that he saw many of the key situations headed. To that extent, there are many who would applaud him and say that while some would consider him a "traitor", placing the whims of a party over what he genuinely feels is in the best interest and future of the nation would be an act of treason and not worthy of someone who has lived a life of sacrifice and service to the country.
On a personal level, I do have a problem with some of the comment that I do read that seem to make light of all the sacrifice that he has made in service to our country. I think sometimes people get caught up in their parties that they allow it to supercede some things that should always be held in higher esteem. Regardless of his party affiliation, I will always applaud his service in our military and to our country. Much like I respect the service and sacrifice of McCain and my very own father and several of the members of AFF, I do respect his service and I would think long and hard before I call any of these men and women traitors.
