Re: This Bill Ayers stuff is John McCain's last st
OldTimer,
I live in Memphis - I can assure you there are thousands of blacks that are voting for Obama JUST because he's black. They don't have a clue what his platform is or do they care. I hear them on talk radio and their general comment is "it's time a black man is in control".
That's all they think.
So who's racist?

Yea, my daughter's "black" UPS guy asked her if she was voting against Obama because he is black.
She started laughing. "Don't be stupid. You know I'm not prejudice."

RG, I am sure that that is true. However, I also want to point out what many people have pointed out as the obvious strategy of selecting a woman to attract the female Hillary supporters. It is a knife that cuts many ways and is a reflection of our society and past. To a much lesser degree, the argument can be made that selecting an evangelical Christian is the same type of move (selecting someone who certain people can immediately relate to sight unseen and feel some level of kinship and common interest with)
Ultimately, however, I don't believe that it was the Black Community that caused Obama's national campaign to be successful at its launch.

yes but they voted for John Kerry just because he was a democrat.
I really wonder if this is about Barak being black or being black and democrat.
i suspect you would find most black voters would vote democrat over a conservitive black candidate.
Now the level of excitement is much higher in the black community because there is a black liberal with a chance of winning. that may be true, but i am betting the vast majority are voting party over color.

Agreed.
However, I'm not voting for McCain/Palin just because she's an evangelical Christian. I'm voting because my beliefs are closest match with theirs.
There are COGIC members here (basically same values I have) that are going to vote simply because Obama is black and they aren't even considering the platform. That's where the racism comes in.
I completely agree with you too that the black community isn't responsible for his success - - who or what is responsible SHOULD be what we are all concerned about.

I agree with this as well. It's more of that blind partisanship that I love so much.

RG, The parrallel that I was making though with females I believe still does hold true. I think that every political pundit agreed that selecting a female would have a significant impact on female voters...and it was only on the basis of Palin's gender that people have discussed the spectre of her taking the Hillary supporters. In a nutshell, if she were a man, the issue of her taking the Hillary supporters would not have even been raised. Such is life and if we are going to criticize it in one arena we have to recognize it in the others. Personally, in order for me to be convinced that the actual race was the main deciding factor, I would have to see Blacks come out and overwhelmingly vote for a Black Republican. Otherwise, it is as Ferd pointed out, in keeping with the partisan Black vote (of course there is added momentum with him being Black but it is not going against the norm)
Having said all of that, let me say that the issue of Palin grabbing some Hillary supporters does involve jumping party lines and voting well against their political positions of the past. I have heard some of those on the left actually express frustration that the gender of Palin does seem to be attracting Hillary supporters in spite of their drastic differences on policy position.
