Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Since nobody else has stepped up to the plate, I guess I'll have to take a stab at it.

1. Use discernment.

2. Assume it's for real.

3. Assume it's bogus.

#1 is unreliable. Two different discerners could easily get different answers. Even if they don't, they could both be wrong. And anyone who thinks they can discern could very well be wrong about their ability (thus explaining why two may discern different answers).

#2 is dangerous. If the message is "God says you must divorce you wife", well, 'nuff said. (Unless it really is for real! Hmm.)

#3 is pretty safe. Odds are you're right (IMO), and even if you're wrong, do you really think God will hold you responsible for taking the safest approach? Personally, I think God would use a more reliable method for giving you guidance (if that's the type of message it is).

Which is probably what everyone who "hears from God" says.
