Praise God!!!
The last time I took anti-malarial, I took some generic brand because it was so much cheaper. I didn't have any reaction though. I have had a reaction (slight) to some of the food though. I always took a filtered water bottle as well and filtered EVERY drop of water that I drank after I left the US.

I'm not MOW, but I will answer this. We took Lariam when we went to Kenya in 2005 and 2006 and did fine with it. It is usually safe to take unless you are prone to depression or psychological problems. The stuff you hear about it will really scare you, but my doctor said in all of his years, he's never had anyone have the scary side effects that are talked about. (Law and Order did a show on it once, and it scared the willies out of me; the guy had a psychotic episode months after he took the drug!). Anyway, my doctor said it's basically all hype.
However, now that they have switched my heart meds to Toprol, it is incompatible with Lariam, so I will have to take Malarone (sp.) next time I go. I think you have to take it every day, rather than once a week.

Sherri, did you go to school with Kim Soo Man, the minister I was with in Korea? He went to JCM, but I'm not sure when.

Sherri,
I took it last time (Jan. 2007) and it didn't bother me, but this time it did. One night I felt the most depressing, hopeless, despairing thoughts I have ever felt. And no I am not prone or ever have been prone to depression.
I also did not sleep or was essentially restless for 5 nights in a row, I think the Lariam combined with the Spicy Indian food made it difficult.
Then my arms and feet started tingling and my heart started racing and felt like that it began to beat irregular. I then began to figure that the medication was the cause. Yet the pharmacy tech only told me the major side effect was weird dreams. I didn't have dreams but I think I had all of the other major side effects.
When I got home I pulled out the medication consulation sheet and saw that all of the stuff that I was experiencing was due to the Lariam and was considered to be adverse side effects. So when I go again I will have to find an alternative. I understand the hype about it, but having experienced some of the adverse reactions I tend to feel that Lariam is not worth it for me.
