I guess I'm just really old-school.... me, and later my sister, grew up with a curfew to be back inside our house by 11pm until we left for college.... my youth pastor used to tell the youth group, Nothing good youth-related happens after midnight, so you really don't have any excuse not to be indoors by then.... unless we were in-route from a special church out-of-town event or lock-in, he made sure we were able to get back home at a reasonable time....

By the way, many communities have laws against loitering and what you described you and others were doing was loitering.
Children have no business being out at 1:00 in the morning and any parent willing to let their children out that late should perhaps lose their right to be parents.
As for the air gun thing, there are places for doing this kind of activity - a church parking lot late at night is not one of those places!

it is private property.... not public sidewalk or store parking lot.
and that is the thing with Apostolics... late church services... late night eating out. Come on they're teens... we stay up real late. That doesn't mean suspicious activity.
In fact, Indiana dist camp is going on right now... they don't even start activities until 11 pm... and run sometimes up to about 2-3 am. Last night they started olympic night at probably midnight... that is why they have all the huge lights and everything from climbing walls to jumping things set up for these kids.
Teens are teens...and they stay up half the night and sleep most of the day....except for camp or conf...then they just go 24 hours. They have the rest of their lives to grow up and be fuddy duddies like the rest of us.
and btw, I am a good parent.. on Friday nights, I am known for taking my kids to my church...sitting in my car...even sleeping in my car until about 1- 2 until my kids are through socializing with the youth group. Our church has a good deal of land and they just hang out and play ball on Friday nights.

Until I was half-way between 11 and 12 years old, I was one of those kids who ran the streets unsupervised.

Good grief...next thing you know we'll be preaching against Hide & Seek cause some stupid neighbor might think our youth are criminals with evil intentions all because they are hiding in the bushes!

Back in the early 90's, my youth group used to play Capture the Flag at City Park all the time and the police actually made us stop playing because we were out after 9pm and on city property....
based on your logic, what was wrong with that??? We were just running around trying to find a silly flag.... with no trenchcoats or guns, for that matter....

Not relevant. Children have no business being out that late loitering in a church parking lot.

That they do these things doesn't make it right.

My teen doesn't stay up half the night and sleep most of the day and neither do the teens of any other parents I know (including several in the church I attend). Again, many communities have laws against loitering. Some communities even have curfews.

Nothing was wrong with that other than maybe breaking a city curfew on city property???
I was being sarcastic about the Hide & Seek thing (meaning you can find wrong in anything if one looks hard enough)...you either missed that or we are not understanding each other.
Btw, which (city name removed) church?

Reason: city name removed

If the kids are out late at night doing it, they should preach against it! The issue isn't the activity, it's the time of night when they were doing it, how the kids were dressed (excuse me, gas masks???) and what the activity looked like when the police drove up.

Chan, you're going a bit left-field with some of your comments....
I agree with you that kids don't really have any business just loitering at church after 11 or 12 without adult supervision.... whether their intent is good or not.... go to someone's house and chat or play board games, etc....
youth camps do conduct after 11 or 12 o'clock activities, but they are all under adult supervision.... which imo is perfectly acceptable.... the lateness of the hour isn't the issue imo as much as the lack of adult supervision....

there was no previous city curfew, it had just been initiated.... so i would imagine that they began to tell all kids outdoors to go home....
