Re: The "Affordable" Care Act
Quote:
Cindy Vinson and Tom Waschura are big believers in the Affordable Care Act. They vote independent and are proud to say they helped elect and re-elect President Barack Obama.
Yet, like many other Bay Area residents who pay for their own medical insurance, they were floored last week when they opened their bills: Their policies were being replaced with pricier plans that conform to all the requirements of the new health care law.
Vinson, of San Jose, will pay $1,800 more a year for an individual policy, while Waschura, of Portola Valley, will cough up almost $10,000 more for insurance for his family of four.
|
This makes me laugh. You get what you voted for.
Quote:
"I was laughing at Boehner -- until the mail came today," Waschura said, referring to House Speaker John Boehner, who is leading the Republican charge to defund Obamacare.
"I really don't like the Republican tactics, but at least now I can understand why they are so pissed about this. When you take $10,000 out of my family's pocket each year, that's otherwise disposable income or retirement savings that will not be going into our local economy."
|
Wish I could've seen the look on their faces when they opened the mail to see the enormous jump in cost.
Quote:
"Of course, I want people to have health care," Vinson said. "I just didn't realize I would be theone who was going to pay for it personally."

Don't fret, DM, JD....there is a feel-good, "bummercare works" story in the article...
Quote:
Marilynn Gray-Raine, [a] 64-year-old Danville artist, who survived breast cancer, has purchased health insurance for herself for decades. She watched her Anthem Blue Cross monthly premiums rise from $317 in 2005 to $1,298 in 2013. But she found out last week from the Covered California site that her payments will drop to about $795 a month.

Sounds very capitalist and not socialist at all. Single payer needs to happen asap. Look at all the countries that have single payer. Their costs are extremely lower.

Let me ask you this, whats the solution? Wouldnt single payer be better for jobs because it takes away employers having to provide insurance? Obamacare has the right goal in mind. Is it doing it the right way? That remains to be seen. How do we lower costs? How do we get everyone to have access to healthcare?

Not a perfect solution but let's start with
Fixing the Economy. Get the Economy revving and increase Jobs. Give tax breaks and other incentives for having a medical plan for employees.
Allow more competition on the drug market to lower cost of medications
Direct all the energy they would have directed at ObamaCare on weeding out fraud

No, a single payer system has proven to be worse for everyone involved. It would be a disaster. You're talking about the Federal govt being the payer for everyone's healthcare. We have a budget problem now, just think about adding govt-paid healthcare for every. single. american. to the list. It would cause the deficit to explode! Social Security is nearly bankrupt, Medicaid and Medicare are having budget shortfalls, yet obama and the Democrats want to create a single-payer system for every. single. american?
Do you understand how absurd that is, just from a financial and budgetary position?
As far as lowering healthcare costs, it's complicated.
I saw the GOP sheet from Boehner on lowering healthcare and it was vanilla. No real substantive information, just bullet points. I don't know if it's possible to reverse the trend and lower healthcare costs. But what I do know is a single-payer health system is NOT the answer.
