We had a Pastor Elmore when I started at that church. He wasn't very approachable at all, as far as hugs, and neither was his wife. However, he was only my Pastor for about 3 months.
Then Pastor Rufus and Sister Pam Parker became our Pastors!
My fondness of them makes me teary-eyed at times. When I knew them, I never thought I'd be anything other than an Apostolic for all of my life. They were BOTH so loving and so full of joy!
They were both so very kind to me! Pastor Parker was a hugger and so was Sister Parker, but she only hugged me a couple of times-- but it wasn't out of coldness or anything like that. She DID NOT have an "unapproachable" air about her, not in the least bit.
Knowing the two of them and being a member of their church made my time at Okinawa a positive experience I will always remember! They didn't have any of the nasty, self-righteous attributes that I often found at the other UPCI churches I attended after leaving Okinawa.
In fact, I hadn't even heard of the UPCI until I was stationed in Okinawa and would NEVER have attended UPCI churches for as long as I did if it wasn't for my year experience with the Parkers!
Pastor Dennis was the one who started the Asian Military Mission and I hung out with he and his wife on one occasion on Kadena. I remmber a joke he made that seemed to speak very sarcastically of the "sin" of watching
"Fantasy Island" on tv. He preached at our church once for the nearly year and a half I was there.
