Man, I used to be a LOT thinner and a lot healthier. We're a lot busier than we used to be, with 6 people + pets in the household, and it gets really difficult (and expensive) to eat all lean meats, veggies/fruit and organics. I've probably put on 20 lbs. since my son was born, and I was at least 30 lbs overweight when I got pregnant with him. *sigh* Do the math: my petite frame is packing 50 extra lbs. and I'm not particularly happy about it. Did I get that way by sitting down and eating whole tubs of ice cream or a full pan of brownies? Definitely not.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Food is a necessity to human survival, unlike other addictive substances. Therefore, you can't tell people to simply abstain from food, whereas you could tell them to abstain from unnecessary substances.

2. Abstinence is often easier than moderation and discernment.

3. Saying that someone who is "fat is going to hell" is like saying someone with "lung disease is going to hell." It's kind of stupid to pinpoint the symptoms of a problem as the sin when that symptom can be shared with a number of causes. A person can develop lung disease after they've quite smoking; we wouldn't say they were going to hell for having the disease, would we?

4. Americans in general are overweight and unhealthy, and it's not just portion sizes that are the problem. It's the type of foods we eat, coupled with a lack of exercise. We are increasingly bound to desks and computers instead of working outside, we drive everywhere instead of riding a bike or walking, and we ride escalators and elevators instead of taking the stairs. We even have to set aside special time for exercise that our grandparents got every day just by going about their daily routine.

5. Gluttony is a sin. Now define "gluttony." It isn't just a matter of eating an extra piece of pie on Thanksgiving is it? If it is, there are a lot of hell-bound people on this forum, and that would include the skinny ones who ate until their stomachs hurt. (Oh, yeah, you know who you are, and you know you did. )

Bottom line:

This is a cultural problem, not a sin problem. (for the most part)
I didn't eat THAT much. But, I did eat a slice of pecan pie.

Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?

We need to stop making excuses for America's eating problem. I understand that some people may have a health issue which might contribute to being overweight, but the bottom line is this Nation is fat, and very sick.

This doesn't mean we are supposed to hate fat people, but telling people that they are big and unhealthy is what people need to hear. I've watched several people on this Forum get upset when this subject is discussed, which only contributes to the problem of our children growing up with premature diseases and low self esteem.

We are allowing the Food Industry to KILL us, instead of standing up and refusing to buy all of the JUNK FOOD that fills our stores and fast food restaurants.

This program spells things out pretty clear.

Sis, you won't go to Hell, but you might have health related problems because of being overweight.

Over 30 years ago I was told to quit smoking cigarettes by the Church because they are bad for the body. Today, some of these same men who told me to dump the smokes are huge and are suffering from heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and many other problems because of their diet.

Quality of life and a good example are the result of staying lean and fit.

Good video. We are avid bike riders in our family. Kids all play tennis. When they were small, I bought them shares of stock in junk food companies. Soda pop, and fast food. I teach them how to invest and they can see kids paying 1 dollar for a soda pop at school makes them money.

I just turned 50 and I've noticed that my metabolism has slowed down. I don't burn the calories as easy as I used to so I've got to watch my calorie intake closer.

If you are serious about losing weight, goals are better accomplished when they are written down.

When I was about 27, I saw I was gaining weight and decided to make some changes. My workouts were written down and I monitored them closely, and my wife made big changes in what she put on the table.

I just did a Bible Study at Church on SALT. Americans on average consume 6000 mgs per day. We only need about 1500. I did a full round of slides, showing everyone the foods they are eating without really reading the labels.

People were shocked to find out how we are being poisoned by processed foods which are FULL of SALT/sodium. Also, the SALT today, just like sugar, flour, and oils, is processed and not friendly to the body. In fact, it's actually a synthetic which is completely unnatural.

Our SALT problem is causing fluid retention/hypertension, kidney disease, stomach cancer, and hyperthyroidism.

One component of the problem is the way we manufacture and process foods today. We are essentially distilling and compacting the energy rich portions of our foods and consuming this after discarding the "shells."

For example, wheat. Our hunter gatherer ancestors ate wheat grains on a seasonal basis for around 100,000 years and we as humans developed and adapted to that diet.

Today, we have selected and bred varieties of wheat that have the highest levels of what we consider "desirable" qualities and then we refine the grain to get huge amounts of the nucleus and its energy rich components. The result is that our bodies are inundated with unneeded calories and gluten at such high levels that more and more of our population is being "poisoned" by one of nature's most nutritious plants.

We took a good thing and made it "too good." Similar examples can be found with other food sources.

Instead of a family making do with every part of a cow that can be used and then "fasting" from meat until the next slaughter, we devour the richest cuts on an almost daily basis (in American and other developed nations).

The problem isn't just the size of a serving. The problem is also the dense calories that our processing and refining packs into the "food" itself.

Pelthais shows he is clueless regarding wheat. Actually dishonest.

Wheat is a crop that digs show was eaten year round in the form of bread. we find many places it was stored. Potatos, onions, carrots and cabbage or root crops went into cellars and lasted into the winter.

Mennonites brought wheat from Russia and the flour mills that have milled for over 100 years find protein germ and other levels don't change much. I taught bible studies years ago with a man that worked in a flour mill laboratory for years and then went to grad school, too bad he couldn't see the "poison" Pelthais claimed.

The poison claim is dishonest. It is a lie. I don't know where he found records of people being poisoned. I have a cousin that has a contract to raise wheat which has a whiter covering and is sold in whole wheat bread but the bread is not brown on the inside.

Wheat products are very healthy and complete. Adding too much sugar and oil helps products brown more but does increase fat content.

We have a share cropper that raises wheat and we grind our own grain for baking

Don't believe people that write about "refining" wheat and creating poison.

http://consider.k-state.edu/majorsli...ingSciMgmt.pdf
I am sure the Kansas State Milling school will laugh if they read about refining wheat and creating poison.

God made a grain which is a complete meal. Removing the bran, pollard and germ removes some nutrients we need but it doesn't become poison.

Whole wheat and raw milk are very nutritious. No poison in wheat.
You can kill rats by feeding them straight soybeans. The high % of protein can cause renal shutdown. It isn't poison. If the driink water.
