Advice from a GSD owner. I've owned three full blooded GSD's(a one year old male currently) and one GSD-Husky mix, and they've all been totally different from one another. Our current dog has been the biggest problem child, but we still love him. All dogs are individuals, even from the same litter, so if you get a chance to pick from a litter, your best bet is to go with the most mellow of the bunch(but not shy or scared). It's always a good idea to pick a puppy that is at or below your family's energy level. GSDs as a breed are athletes, perhaps even the word "gladiators" is appropriate. These dogs thrive on being challenged, and when they don't have any excitement in their lives, they'll find some on their own, usually to the dismay of their owners. They are most content when they feel they have a job to do. Excercise, discipline, affection, in that order. Pick an easygoing, mellow GSD puppy, give him lots of challenging excercise, early training, and positive reinforcement, and you'll have a friend who would gladly take a bullet for you and your family.
By the way, the female GSD-Husky mix I had was the best dog I ever owned.

How about barking? I've heard that getting a dog not to bark incessantly is more about training than breed, but what do you guys think?
I'd be more worried about training the kid!
Compared to most kids, dogs are easy to train! (especially as smart as German Shepherds are)
I just couldn't let that remark pass - as a mother for a loooooong time, I'm speaking from experience here!

Great minds think alike. My GSD's name is Sasha as well. Is that the dog that is mixed with Husky/. She looks a lot like a purebred Shepherd. She actually looks a lot like our Sasha when we got her.
