Personally, I would recommend The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey instead.
I don't have to read an entire repertoire to get the feel for an author. Like I said, he's not my favorite. I didn't say they weren't worth reading--it's just that his books restate things I've heard all my life. In other words, "predictable." Capiche?

I agree with you, Miss B, on both counts, I have read most all of Phillip Yancey's books.

So, really, I think that scripture was taken out of context. It is actually speaking of things that are beyond our control.

Good grief, that is about as solid as many of the things we have been sold over the years.

This thread is about David Bernard's books, isn't it? lol Which means that we are pointing out the books we have read and liked. It isn't about, "I would recommend this one instead."
I happen to have liked John MacArthur's book, Forgiveness, but since this thread isn't about John MacArthur or Philip Yancey or Phillip Keller or C.S. Lewis or......

His words were, "Jesus Himself assumed that people would not change the color of their hair ( Matthew 5:36)."
As I said, I believe this is taken out of context, but he is good man and I won't hold this over his head. I'm sure, very sure, we can disagree with a good many authors on various topics and issues.
I guess here, it's his turn to be bashed.

There is no way the book could be bad.

That is just silly. None of those things makes one a great writer. DB is not now nor has he ever been a great writer. There are so many in the UPC that think they are great writers and they are not. As much as I respect KH his book The Anointed Ones (I think that was the title) amateur at best. However, as a leader I think the future will show he was the man for the hour.

I didn't term him as a "great" writer. I don't think there are that many "great" writers to be had, IMO. I don't view Phillip Yancey as a "great" writer.
I did like the information Bernard put out in, God's Infallible Word. I happen to like and respect him quite a lot. He worked with my husband on a church matter and was very thorough, meticulous in detail and very kind, so I will defend him a little.

Re: If I'm Out Of Order...
I think Philip Yancey is a great writer. I have most of his books. Whats so Amazing About Grace trumps any writing on grace I have ever come across from any Apostolic writer.
I also have found DB to be a bit weak on some arguments. He goe sout of his way to associate the lottery with Idolatry in his Holiness books. Really? Playing the lotto is the same as worshipping a false god? I found that terribly sad.
That said, I thinkhe is a good writer. Not great, and not always the most honest or thorough, but good.

Re: If I'm Out Of Order...
After a conversation I had last night with someone familiar with DB, and his contributions to our organization, I wish to modify my statement.
I am glad DB is our new GS.
I still don't like the books I have read by him, but I now realize the books I am familiar with were written over 20 years ago.
Besides, he's written several, I've written none.
Maybe one day I'll write a book on the Gospel and Biblical Doctrines and let someone talk about how much they like or don't like my work.

I don't like his books.
I wish KH was re-elected.
Truth be told, the GS has very little to do with what happens in my local assembly and I realize this.
But I really don't like his books or the way that so many seem to rally around his books as "Gospel".
I don't know him personally-- my dislike for him is based off of the books I've read by him-- two of them, and the books, websites, etc I've read where his works have been referenced (many).

I don't like his books either ... they don't have any pictures
