Re: What's the difference?

No one here is advocating drinking until one is drunk. What is at debate is the question about whether a substance in and of itself is sin or not.

Although, the drinks you specifically named are drinks that are very strong. I'd not recommend them without also recommending caution.

Did God encourage "sin"???
Deuteronomy 14:24-27 English Standard Version (ESV)
24 And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the Lord your God chooses, to set his name there, 25 then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the Lord your God chooses 26 and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household. 27 And you shall not neglect the Levite who is within your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance with you.
What cracks me up is you would think the people who twist a verse in the SAME book (22:5) to mean no pants on women could understand a simple command in the SAME book to drink wine and strong drink!!!!

Re: What's the difference?

So you guys are ok with Christians drinking alcohol. what about tobacco use you know just to calm the nerves, or a little cocaine just as a shot of energy just with other christians who think its ok to use. is there any scripture against that? there may be more scripture against strong drink than meth, how about a big cigar like Churchill? are any of these substances sin if you use them?

Re: What's the difference?

The issue I have with drinking alcohol is that it is an epic addiction responsible for many deaths. And it seems that some are more prone to addiction than others, but have no idea they are until it is to late.

So, while it might not be a sin to have a small glass of wine with a meal, I think it's irresponsible behavior in light of the level of addiction in our society.

Re: What's the difference?

Alcoholism affects people from all walks of life. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), more than 80,000 people die from alcohol-related deaths each year in the United States. And alcohol continues to be one of the nation’s most preventable causes of death, second only to tobacco and a poor diet/sedentary lifestyle.

Alcoholism has a profound effect on the entire body, especially the brain, heart, pancreas, mouth, liver and immune system. In spite of its negative impact, more Americans than ever before consume alcohol on a regular basis. Understanding the dangers of alcohol abuse and its impact on society can help you and your loved ones make healthier choices.

Also, I don't smoke or drink, I eat healthy, walk several miles each day, and lift weights.

Re: What's the difference?

You can't even say your living a overcoming life if you are smoking, and drinking alcohol
Those are the basic elements of the world. The Holy Ghost is not dwelling in a bar room, crack house, or a brothel. That you would even consider that let's me know, you are lacking somewhere.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? [20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
And don't go talking about food and all this other stuff, because that's equally bad and nobody said it wasnt.

1Corinthians 3:16-17 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? [17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are."

Maybe in those days for lack of options they had to drink Strong drink to purify water or maybe that's all there was to drink somewhere. But you and me don't have that problem, you have so many options you choosing that to drink, let's you know what you really got on your mind. Call me a ol fuddy duddy if you like, but it's the truth anyway. Hey, they got churches now that have wineries, they believe in a Trinity though I'm sure, but hey maybe you could convert'em...

Addiction to the internet is a big problem too. I don't see your exhortation to stop using it because some people get addicted to it.

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

Is drinking alcohol expedient or not expedient. As with most things, it depends on the exact circumstances and situation.
