We recently have had revival where over 100 received the Holy Ghost and we baptize in most of our services (including Friday and today this weekend).
Indeed.
I do believe there will be some changes in Pentecost over time as the generational shift continues.

....but to imply that the younger generation is biding their time, waiting for the older ones "to die off" just seems to paint a very distorted picture of things.

So if we ditch the standards everyone will love the UPC?

I simply don't care enough to "revolt."

I'm gonna pastor how I feel led to.

Someone else can worry about reform.

Re: What is the young UPC preacher waiting for?

I can't speak for the younger generation of pastor, as I don't know any.

Speaking of younger people in general, I think they abandon "traditions" for the wrong reasons. It's more of the worlds tug on their hearts.

There are few young people that abandon "traditions" and still love God. But, they do exist.

No. There is a man in Dunlap, Washington and a woman in Burley New Hampshire who will not.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

I spent most of my ministry doing just that. Waiting for the latest cloud of doom that an elder senselessly pronounced over a congregation to dissapate and trying to be positive and to preach Christian values that could be applied in a practical fashion.

But then one of the old man's daughter's complained and said, "Dad why don't you have Brother (pelathais) preach more? And have Brother (pelathais) handle the 'outreaches'" (the embarassing public tantrums that OTP is known for). When I heard that, I knew my fate would soon be sealed.

'Shore enuf.

You see the "Old Timers" were raised with a concept that if they worked hard and sacrificed they could carve out a kingdom of their own. Then "holding the fort" meant just protecting your meal ticket (tithes) and your reputation among the brethren (how "clean" your church was).

But silly kids like me came along and were persuaded to give up everything for THE KINGDOM and we were naive enough to believe that THE KINGDOM was what everyone else had in mind as well. So we devoted ourselves to building THE KINGDOM and found ourselves envied and despised by our elders who were only interested in running their kingdom - a good 'ol boy's club.

When the paranoia of the elders hit a certain level (or in my case when a philandering good 'ol boy showed up) we where thrown out like yesterday's fish heads.

Now I see those churches and my years of labor in the hands of strangers who may be well intentioned - but whatever happened to that "KINGDOM" thing that captured my heart when I was young?

It just seems to me that the whole thing was a waste of time - in this case, a life time. Had I worked, prayed, sweated and endured the worst humiliations just so some guy from Oklahoma could come out to our place and get from his secretary that which his wife didn't really want to do for him? Despite my best efforts - I had built a sex club!

Burn it down, I say. If that strikes you as "revelotion" then so be it. 2 Kings 23:16.

Turn about and "spy" some of those sepulchres. You know what to do next. Those who have truly "proclaimed the Word of God" have nothing to fear. Their bones will rest.

Certainly not.

After they're fully satisfied on the standards thing, there will be some who want to compromise on the baptism thing...then others who'll want to downplay the speaking in tongues thing....then others who'll want us to de-emphasize the Oneness thing...

There are some among us who will never be satisfied until the UPC is just like the local Baptist church. Maybe they should save themselves the trouble and just go join the local baptist church.
