I spent most of my ministry doing just that. Waiting for the latest cloud of doom that an elder senselessly pronounced over a congregation to dissapate and trying to be positive and to preach Christian values that could be applied in a practical fashion.
But then one of the old man's daughter's complained and said, "Dad why don't you have Brother (
pelathais) preach more? And have Brother (
pelathais) handle the 'outreaches'" (the embarassing public tantrums that OTP is known for). When I heard that, I knew my fate would soon be sealed.
'Shore enuf.
You see the "Old Timers" were raised with a concept that if they worked hard and sacrificed they could carve out a kingdom of their own. Then "holding the fort" meant just protecting your meal ticket (tithes) and your reputation among the brethren (how "clean" your church was).
But silly kids like me came along and were persuaded to give up everything for THE KINGDOM and we were naive enough to believe that THE KINGDOM was what everyone else had in mind as well. So we devoted ourselves to building THE KINGDOM and found ourselves envied and despised by our elders who were only interested in running their kingdom - a good 'ol boy's club.
When the paranoia of the elders hit a certain level (or in my case when a philandering good 'ol boy showed up) we where thrown out like yesterday's fish heads.
Now I see those churches and my years of labor in the hands of strangers who may be well intentioned - but whatever happened to that "KINGDOM" thing that captured my heart when I was young?
It just seems to me that the whole thing was a waste of time - in this case, a life time. Had I worked, prayed, sweated and endured the worst humiliations just so some guy from Oklahoma could come out to our place and get from his secretary that which his wife didn't really want to do for him? Despite my best efforts - I had built a sex club!
Burn it down, I say. If that strikes you as "revelotion" then so be it.
2 Kings 23:16.
Turn about and "spy" some of those sepulchres. You know what to do next. Those who have truly "proclaimed the Word of God" have nothing to fear. Their bones will rest.
