Re: Family History/Lineage

I searched out my genealogy and during the process I posted my findings on the internet.

I received an email from a gentleman who said he thinks he might be kin to us.

Come to find out... when my grandmother met my grandfather, unbeknownst to her, he had up and left his wife and 3 kids and never told her about it. His previous wife and her 3 kids were struggling to live just an hour or so away from where he and my grandmother lived. She (the previous wife) finally had to send one of the kids to some other family because she could not afford to feed them all. (Incidentally he is the one who contacted me)

He eventually left my grandmother as well (when the kids were small) and had 2 other wives and ensuing children that we know of.

But we found out many exciting things too. We tracked back to the original family that brought our name over the pond.

We actually found the original person who bore our surname because our surname came about somewhat by accident and a bad case of being eat up with pride.

It was interesting and because of it we have met more of our family and they are all wonderful people who we are better off for having met.

Nathan,

My Grandparents on my dad side were from Norway-fact is there is a town that we took our surname from.

My uncle used to say this, (Norwegian accent)

"10,000 Swedes ran through the weeds, chased by one Norwegian!"

This is just too funny.

Re: Family History/Lineage

My family descends from two brothers who came to America in 1625. They founded several towns in Mass. and Conn. and by the time of the Revolution, had over 50 ministers in the family. About two dozen of them fought for Independence. Down to the Civil War (or as it is known in Texas, the War for Independence) where two of them in Ohio chose the wrong side. (From a Texas perspective!!!) And per another post we have several instances of BOTH sides of a marriage having the same last name.

Re: Family History/Lineage

Our surname is very rare and any time you hear of it they are likely relatives. Most of the ones located in the States were found in Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri. The real successful ones went to Canada and Australia where they founded an Anglican college in Waterloo, Ontario and a large gold mining operation in Queensland. We "holy rollers" would probably scare our more "dignified" cousins.

Re: Family History/Lineage

Here's an old one of my grandparents and my Dad. My grandpa was the son of a "Holiness" preacher but this was taken before they came into Pentecost. My grandpa was the only boy in a family of 10 children. Nine sisters and yet he actually "survived" and I'm here today!
