Re: Who's going to win it all
hey i have a question. in the UPCI's articles of faith it states that
"We wholeheartedly disapprove of our people indulging in any activities which are not conducive to good Christianity and Godly living, such as theaters, dances, mixed bathing, women cutting their hair, make-up, any apparel that immodestly exposes the body, all worldly sports and amusements, and unwholesome radio programs and music. Furthermore, because of the display of all these evils on television, we disapprove of any of our people having television sets in their homes. We admonish all of our people to refrain from any of these practices in the interest of spiritual progress and the soon coming of the Lord for His church."
so why are we paying attention to the sports teams?

Cause I grew up UPCI.
But I am no longer.
The articles of faith are so far from the idea of faith.
Any questions!

Re: Who's going to win it all
yes.... if it was Gods will for us to follow the articles of faith back then and if men of God prayed and fasted in order to know Gods will, and backed up the articles of faith with scripture, AND God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. how come you no longer believe them? and not just you my friend but everyone that doesnt obey them? if sports were wrong 50 years ago, and if tv was wrong 50 years ago, and if makeup, women cutting their hair and other things was wrong 50 years ago, wouldnt it be a lot worse now?????

God has never changed. Men, on the other hand, get enlightened and change their views from year to year.
For instance, there are certain years I dislike the Cubs, but this year I have hope!
BTW, that part of the AOF is pretty much a joke. Very few UPCI churches are following that to the letter!

I have to agree with that statement. I'm UPCI and the only church in our area that follows it to the letter has gone from about 20 people when he took the the church to about 4 now. Sports was just one of the problems.

Re: Who's going to win it all
so in other words some of the holiness standards we used to believe are outdated and never really mattered to God... Hmmm... i wonder what some of the old time pentecostal preachers would think.. i know that i hold all of those standards as my own personal convictions.
i look at it this way i guess. you can get to heaven in either a pinto or a lamborgini galado... both may get you there but with the latter youll have a lot smoother ride and you wont have nearly as many breakdowns...

You ought to see some of the holiness standards from the 1700s. I bet they would roll over in their graves if they saw how you look and the things you do today!
BTW, (This is a true story!) I had a friend (actually he was Jim Yohe's uncle) who owned a used Lambergini. It was a cool car, but it was constantly breaking down! It had a bad engine in it!

Re: Who's going to win it all
Back to the matter at hand, experts are saying that the Cubs, Cards and Brewers are the three best teams in the National League this year. It's too bad that they're all in the same division. Only two will make the playoffs!
I think it's the Cards who will be the odd team out!

Re: Who's going to win it all
lol well that's what I get for trying an analogy! shot down! and I see what your saying about folks back in the 1700's and you could also bring up how we acted about the radio when it first came out. I guess I just love God enough that I want to show Him my love and devotion by concecrating some things for Him. you know what I mean?
I heard a story one time of a girl who had costume jewelry and her favorite piece was a pearl necklace (dont worry I don't wear jewelry!) and one day as her father was tucking her into bed her asked 'sweetheart do you love me?' and she replied 'yes daddy I do' and so her father said 'then give me your necklace.' 'no father! I can't! but you can have my favorite doll if you want!' 'no sweetheart' the father replied and kissed and and left.
now this continued for a few days and every time the father aked his daughter if she loved him and she said yes he would ask for her necklace and she would offer something else of hers in return. finally one day the father asked again if he could have the necklace and the daughter on this day said 'yes daddy I love you more than this necklace. here you can have it' and she gave it to her father thinking she had lost her most precious possession, but after the father had taken the castume necklace with tears in his eyes he pulled out of his pocket a jewelry box with a brand new, real pearl necklace, bigger and more beautiful then the fake one.
so I guess the moral is I want to give God everything that's I hold dear to show my devotion because He has something bigger and better for me than I could ever imagine
