In our ministry, we have had two good reasons to sue, but we chose not to go to court because we know God is our source. He has always taken care of us.

I once had every right to sue a minister over mishandling of an investment ($5,000) I had made with him. I just couldn't do it! I looked at it as a learning experience.

He promised to pay me back, but I've never seen a penny! Oh well.....

My wife is the bean counter and I am the guy always paying for others and giving away the farm...glad she's around for sure!!

So, a long time ago, a money issue came up with a brother in Christ...she wanted to go after him with a louisville slugger, I just couldn't do it. I would rather lose money than lose my brother. Now having said that, it wasn't too much of a hurdle to overcome, had this been a house, or something larger, I hope I would do the right thing, but ya never know with monkeys...

If the assembly of the saints do not have an alternative for dispute resolution in place, we are setting ourselves up for a compelling temptation to take our greivance to the only "up and running" system, which happens to be..."before the unjust".

I was priviledged to be a proponent in putting together a dispute resolution system in my local assembly. It had two very sensitive cases that were BOTH settled before being brought to the general (larger) public view. A system of "escalating public disclosure" was a core part of the approach from concilation to mediation to arbitration to bringing the matter before the whole church.

I think a thread like this reminds us of how unwillling we are to thoughtfully engage dispute or disagreement within our assembly of faith. It is similar to the silly idea that if you stop reporting criminal events, the crime rate goes down!

I don't know what to think about this system that was put in place over 9 months of brainstorming and procedural considerations and methodologies, and over the last 10 years has faded into obscurity due primarily to lack of use. In retrospect, the decline after the initial 'spike' of activity may have been tributable to its potentcy that folks could make a reference to evoking it's use, and thereby cause progress/action toward resolving the matter directly among the immediate parties...OR....people will far more often suffer themselves to be defrauded then have any aspect of their laundry aired for others to see.

IMO, the saints of God have a very minimal involvement with accountability and openness with each other. I think this lack of openness gives space for gossip and backbiting that could be "starved out of existence" if alternatives for dialog and redress of greivance was available.

Of course not because a real Brother would not have dont the harm to begin with.

I'd say do all you can to keep from a lawsuit, but in the end you have to do what's best for you. And if it means a lawsuit, that may well need to happen in some extreme cases.

Just be prepared for the fallout. Don't expect things to be rosey . . . especially if it's a minister or someone in leadership you target with a lawsuit.

Rev,

When Paul wrote that there were not thousands of denominations and splinter groups. For it to work today in that fashion we would need a strong universal leadership, trusted and unified. One that wouldn't be divided by things like... er what was that vote about again??
