I often teach on the subject of entanglements of/with the world. It is an important subject. We do need to be careful of our involvement in the things that around us. I pointed out this past Sunday that we are strangers on earth and if we don’t feel that we are strangers when in the company of the lost, then we need to review our relationship with God.
This is simple Christian teaching. That doesn’t mean we need to avoid all the places those outside the Family of Faith go, nor does it mean we should avoid all the things those outside the Family of Faith do. What it does mean is that we must first recognize who we are in Christ and let that govern our involvement.
Why is this so hard? What I find is that this kind of teaching is either ignored by the so-called saints, or it is abused and turned into a list of things we must collectively all adhere to. This is just as bad as NOT TEACHING ANYTHING! Why would I spend 5 minutes telling someone to avoid football games when that person has no inclination that would lead sporting events to become engrossing? It is nonsensical. What I must tech is the RULE. Take care of the things you spend your time on. Insure that your focus on the things of God is not diminished by your attachment to the things of this world.
When I teach the principle and leave the application in the hands of the Child of God, and leave the expectation that the child of God will follow the Spirit, then I have done the needful and the saint will grow in maturity. If all I do is give them a list of things to do and not do, then I insure the saint remains stuck and immature and incapable of hearing the voice of God and growing. Paul was very clear on the point. He detested the notion of saints remaining immature.

I get it, you love football. I do, too. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I follow my teams year-round and love watching them play. But I'm not closed-minded or ignorant to the fact that football can become a little g. I've seen it happen too many times.
So while you ridicule and reject that football could ever be a little g, understand there are many who have allowed football to control their lives to their detriment. Whether by playing, watching, or gambling on the game, it can and does happen.
I agree with what you said above...what I don't agree with is your ridicule at the suggestion that football could become a little g.

N David, I take your words here. maybe i overstep when I say it cannot/does not happen. Certainly anything can become engrossing to the point that it nudges God out.
my issue isnt with the person starrting this tread saying "football" is a little G.
it is with the notion that because some folk here talked football they were all worried about us. The very idea that we need to name the list. that we need to have a list of things to avoid least it become the "little g" is absurd.
Im good with (as I stated above) teaching that ALL things we do, we should do with a view to its affect on our spiritual lives. But the point being made here is FOOTBALL BAD! Well Football is NOT bad. Neither is baseball, or watching TV or walking thru the mall etc.

Alas, what if one of these young men so sinfully obsessed with sports managed to be good enough to get a professional contract and play for a living. No0w, if said young man made a few million dollars a year playing these ungodly sports and he said he wanted to not only tithe but go ahead and pay off the church building, would you anti-sports folsk still be so convinced of his worldly sinfullness for loving sports?

I've long said this about about someone winning a lottery or perhaps a million+ dollar jackpot on the slots. I am sure the pastor of said person would be expecting their 100,000-300,000 (or even millions) tithes check.

And counting on God forgiving him later for accepting the filthy lucre.

A family member's pastor plays golf, flies in his son's airplane for the joy of it, and allows for softball playing among the young people.
Yet when a family member wanted to take my nephew to a U of M game, it was a BIG deal, with the remark being made, "We know we're the only one's holding a line."
WHAT?!
The problem is not with the sport, rather with the intent of the heart.
We can make a god out of anything...even our convictions.
Bottom line...if someone is obsessed with hockey or whatever, it is not the fault of the hockey stick and jersey.
