Like it or not, the pope being head of a religious sect a billion strong has a big impact on Christianity. Who's pope affects all of us.
How, you might ask? Take abortion as one example. The political power of the roman sect will be formidable in the battle against abortion. The fragmented nature of the thousands of protestant sects produces a system which simply does not have the clout of the roman sect.
