Re: What will you give for "Lent"

I took communion and received ashes at a Lutheran church. I haven't taken communion in a few years. It has been over a decade since the last time I was in an Ash Wednesday service. I left the service humble and broken. For that I am grateful.

I posted a pic of my ashy forehead on FB. Someone posted a comment, "Please tell me you don't believe that stuff." To which I replied, "believe what?"

Well houston, a lot of people believe it. The rites of Ash Wednesday have been around for decades of centuries.

Re: What will you give for "Lent"

Our church just finished a 40 day fast we started the second week of January. The fast consisted of;

All 40 days no secular media (ok to watch, listen to and read Christian material)
1st ten days no meats or sweets
2nd ten days only one meal per day
3rd ten days same as first ten
4th ten days same as second ten

People were also encouraged to custom tailor their fast as they felt led.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

I'm 30. I haven't been Catholic since the age of 12. This is the first time Ash Wednesday and Lent have any significant meaning. I didn't join the Lutherans and I don't plan to rejoin the Catholics.
